It is impossible these covers to produce such noises. It is probaly something ele causing that noise. You can remove the speaker cover, but is very difficult, by pushing it down and turn it at the same time. Be carefull not breaking the plastic clips. At least here in Greece the is no spare part...
I have it for a year and more and the car is really fantastic. Its overall build quality is good. Although I am sure that the cup version has not the built quality of the reagular 172 and that is logical because cups target is not the build quality, but speed.
I am not sure about the the 4k...
Come on people... The interior is made from plastic. Sure temperature affects them. This is not the case for clios... Its the case for every car. Even my fathers mercedes E200 has annoying rattles... I think that the interior of mk2 is very well made and dont forget the stiff shock absorbers....
CTR might has fewer mechanical problems (although I dont believe this), but the overal build quality is not better than clios. I am not sure about Mk1 but mk2 has by far better quality. Besides, mk2 comes with everything in it whereas CTR has nothing. I like though the feeling of the gear box...

Ok, I know the build quality of your type of car you owns because a friend of mine had it. You are right, it has many problems. My experience from my 172 and the previous owned megane (16v 1600) is that both are excellent cars. No prolems sp far with my mkII 172 and never had a...
Yeah! I totally agree... The same thing happened here in Greece in similar test comparing several tyres... Continental were very good both in wet and dry conditions and overall 1 among the others.
Afterwards, the same magazine (4T) testing mini cooper S, clio 2.0 16v MKII seat leon...
Yes, all renaults have the same problem. I had a (phase 2) megane coupe and the passenger seat never stop to rattle.... annoying. My new MKII 172, has also the same problem but the noise is not as loud as it was in megane, but exists! Only if someone seats, the noise stops. Anyway, I can live...

I couldnt agree more with you. Just add the building quality of the entire cabin (just awfull), lack of refinement and space although its a middle range car. Compare to mkII 2.0 16v, I believe it has better gear box (better feeling), but lack of torque in low-middle rpms. You have to keep rpms...
I had a similar problem, but only when I turned the wheel to the full right position and especially on anomalous surfeces. A sound came out (crackling) and of course I visited renault service. The guys there told me that it was nothing serious, just a loose screw. I cannot help you more, since...
