or the wiring returning the charge from alternator to battery has shorted/burnt out (or a connector some where has broken down) (took me 3 alternators,a battery and a starter motor to find that!), get a meter and beep them out (continuity check)- car electrics are the best fun in the world :(

Ive owned my 03 172 for about 4 months now - has just over 4k on the clock and I still think its great, Ive had no real trouble from it and drive 40 miles to work and back - mixture of motorway and stop start A roads. Plus having the climate control over the last few monthsa has been a god send.
