1.2 16v engine transplant

quick question really...not something im 100% on doing yet...depends on the cost and benifits

i currently have a 51plate 1.2 16v clio....lookin at maybe a 1.8 or even a 1.6 being dropped into the car.....would even consider a 1.4 if it was goihng to be a cheap job.

basically...would i need a new gearbox to handle the extra power? new clutch? what is the overall cost likely to be?

if your not driving yet dont bother as you will need to get used to a car for a year or so, get your skills up. the 1.2 16v is a nippy car too you'll have fun

Forget ging to a 1.4 or 1.6 there not huge enough jump for the effort. for a 1.6 and a 1.4 as well IMO you'd be be best changing the gearbox as well although the 1.4 does run the same type of box as the 1.2.

The 1.8 I take it you mean the last generation 1.8 16V engine is a fair bit of work and not worth it IMO.
Best idea is to drop a 172 engine gearbox suspension brakes gearbox and dash into the car all the parts you need j3ned sells for £1.5k + vat converting t depends how good you are but its jst a bit of ffort making the parts fi together and depends where you got the parts from ie a Cup or a full fat and what power stearing your going to use.

just my oppinion i would sell your car and buy a 172 when you have had some experience in the 1.2!

lol im driving already been driving for 2 yrs now and the 1.2 is the smallest engined car ive the 1.2 purely as i wanted something reliable but cheap 2 insure. so a 172 is out of the question as are most things to insure....thats why im considering an engine transplant as an option especially if the engine looks the same as a 1.2 its unlikely insurance would find out?

Its easy to spot a 1.4 or 1.65 or 172 engine the 1.2 is so different. If you cannot afford the insurance forget about it. if you think you cannot afford insurance imagine what will happen when /if yo crash and insurance refuse as they would to pay up then you'r realy realy stuck any other parties will sue you and your cars not insured and the police will press chrages possible for an uninsured car.

Try cams and headwork until you can afford a faster car or a better conversion....or sell it and buy something cheap, old and fast.

Cams/headwork won't give massive gains but will be noticeable and might keep you happy for a while longer. 80bhp (or whatever these new clios are) as standard is pretty good going already though...

ah rite fair enough, prob a bad idea then. im really mift about my insurance as it is....i understand im relitvly low experianced driver 2 yrs, 0 no claims (been second driver for 18months as ive only just got my own car) 0 bumps, 0 points, 20 end of the month.....yet im paying £1000 as 2nd driver on a 1.2 clio....gf pays £400 year in her 1st year

Insurance fraud? If you have considered the full consequences of what that means and are still thinking about it then you're an idiot. If you haven't then just don't do it, imagine if it was your own mam you ran into and then consider the consequences.

People who drive without insurance are scum. Don't become one of them.

^^ Agree with the above. I'd say best thing to do is keep the car til your 21 (or have a few years ncd before getting something faster) At the end of the day we all start of with low powered cars. I think the 1.2 16v has got a fair amount of power for its engine size (my 1.2 8v only has 60 odd bhp and thats good enough for me most of the time).

you can find cars which are fast you just have to search for them if your wantin a small car go for the yaris t sport under 10 secs and they are group 7. or you could get a astra mark 4 1.6 sxi group 5 or 6 which is 10.5 or you could strech to a 1.8 sxi which can are group 7-9.

Its all very well coming the high and mighty about being legal etc but at the end of the day if they're identical then fair play IMO. No insurance company on the planet is going to rip apart a standard looking engine to measure piston bores etc simply on the possibility that "it might be a transplanted".

Despite what some of more naive people on here think it's a regular occurance (valver hybrid peeps anyone??) and you do get away with it quite easily...fact.
