Was it a 16v 1.4 polo???? Cos if it was then it wouldve beaten you in a straight line (my mum has one, very quick 100bhp, but it doesnt handle, and it doesnt stop either!!!!)

sounds like it could have been a 1.4 8v, i struggled to keep up with the 1.4 16v

i raced my mates 1.4 16v 206 auto-it wasnt even close-i was a cud couple of car lenghts in front and i have a 1.2 8v

As is normal with VW, most of its engines are way off the pace and they offer about fifteen different versions of the same engine. The base 1.4 8v makes...wait for it...60bhp. The next 1.4 8v makes 75bhp (theres also a 16v 1.4 that makes 75bhp in the Golf) and then theres the 100bhp 1.4 that goes in the "16v". That car just embarasses the 16v name.

I know one of the 1.4s have 75bhp, theyre also heavier. Not sure about torque but obviously the shortish gearing helps on the clio.
