could you fabricat the fronts to fit?. i.e weld new plates on? off the stock shocks, or sheet metal?

Yep you could but don't go bodge it.
54mm hubs on the 172 and 58mm (usuable but as you know it differs) on the none Rs. So get the bolt holes drilled out and they will work but spring and damper rates are different.

As edde says the thing to remember is that the 2.0 litre engine is a lot heavier so the front suspension especially will be totally unsuited.
