1.4 16V engine rattle

  renault clio 1.4 16v
howsit gents, right, innitially thought that this was my altinator however after removing the aux belt the noise persists which leads me to believe its one of the cambelt pullies... or is it something more sinister

did the belts 2 years and 40000 km ago, does enyone know what the noise might be or has a similar noise?

im debating weather I should spend 5 grand on a cambelt kit along with the tools, or wait and see if it blows up as a complete engine is 8500 bucks (South African currency)

heres the link, feel free to moan at me if it dosnt work 🙈

right so found the problem, here are a few pics incase someone else has the same problem... took the car to the dealer 2 years and 30000km ago to get the belt and waterpump done, waterpump failed after 40000km. I only took it to the dealer as the tools at the time were as much as the labour cost so i thought i might as well get it done by the specialists... problems I had after that included a aircon that never worked again as well as my allarm module was damaged and had to be replaced... both of which renault wouldnt do anything about as i couldnt prove the aircon was working before i brought it in... fair enough... the ratteling at that stage sounded like tappets or a lifter so i left it for a rainy day...

had a aux belt pulley fail 20000km after that and found that the pullies had not been replaced, even though i paid for the whole kit, a few weeks ago the normal clunking rattle changed its tune to the one i posted a clip of, so yesterday decided to check the cam belt... this is what i was greeted with once the covers were off.

clearly not tensioned and in the wrong position, took the tensioner out to find it was not located in the slot in the water pump

the locating flag had been bent where it was forced against the water pump casting, also found that 2 bolts were missing off the covers and the timing was a tooth out which may have resulted from the crank bolt beeing lose...

so re set the timing and gave her a swing
problem solved, now sounds like a quiet sewing machine lol

moral of the story... if you can do the job yourself... do it yourself...

will be taking the damaged parts and job card back to renault and will try find the tech who did the job... id like to see them give me a new tensioner and give the tech some proper training on cambelt changing... i take my hat off to the designers of modern engines... run fine even with no tension on the cambelt as well as lose and missing bolts
