1.5 diesel misfire & black smoke

Hi I have a 2003 Clio 1.5 dci, which started making a slight rattle sound under load. It sounded like the plastic casing under the wheel arch was catching on the tyre. This happened for several days then, it got louder and the car started loosing power, missfiring and belching out black smoke, just about limped it home.

could this by any chance be a faulty EGR valve?

The EGR can cause the black smoke and loss of power you're on about, not sure about the misfiring though. No harm in disconnecting the plug to the egr and trying it.

I'm sure the other dci owners will be along soon with some input.
