1.6 16v

Ok, before anyone says, dont bother just get a 172/182 I DONT WANT ONE! This is what I want to do, and I want advice on my chosen plans, so please, no pointless comments about just getting a Renault Sport.

Right, having read quite a bit aboput the 1.6 16v, and the fact its the same base engine as used in the super1600 cars, I have decided I definately want to go down the route of modifying a 1.6 16v.

Now my first choice is do I swap my car for a newer one witht eh 1.6 16v, or do i drop a 1.6 16v engine into my car? I already have a 1.6 8v so brakes etc are upto the job.

Or can i 16v my existing engine? and would this still be able to give the same gains?

Obviously, exhaust and closed indcution kit would be going on, my next step would be cams. BenR mentioned that with the right Cams and remap I could get it to 160BHP, what kind of cost would this be?

and after cams, what next and for what gains and at what cost?

Thank you in advance for your help.

would be easier to get a car with a 1.6 16v already in it rather than faff around sourcing an engine and getting it fitted

fancy a "group" (i.e. 2 lol) on cams & remap? :)

there is also the inlet manifold (or something like that) off the S1600 car which sounds like a good plan......

only trouble is ull obv loose some torque (it already obv doesnt have the 8v torque) so u may have to rev it a fair bit to get the power out of it but thats normal from a tuned non-charged engine

if u do get quoted a price can you pm me with it as ive been looking into it as well

Agreed, the PH1 (RSi) and PH2's have dropped a bit in price so might be better worth pickin one up then moddin.

Plus the RSi has read discs IIRC.

Do bear in mind tho, the super 1600 engine may well have 220bhp but it only lasts about 2 rallys!

Thanks for the advice so far.

Almaz, I'm not looking to go to the full 220bhp, Something around the 180bhp mark would be nice eventually.

Lol, I guessed not the full hog!

I'd be a bit dubious about getting more power from the 1.6 16v engine the idle is sh*t to start with without more tuning, remap may help it tho.

What power does the 1.6 8v have as standard?

16v Would be a lot better base to start from.

Might be cheaper in the long run swapping car for an RSi, can't see there being a big difference in price between RSi and RXE, swapping a 16v into yours might be more costly.

to get decent power, the usual principles stand:

Extensive head-work, inc larger valves and modified chamber
Some hi-spec cams
Forged pistons to give a decent Cr
H-section rods (so u can scream the nuts off it!)
Blue-printed bottom end (inc dynamic balancing and flywheel lightening)
Individual throttle bodies
User mappable/standalone ecu

id be quite interested in finding out more about this because with my 1.2 having 120k on the clock i dont know how much more it can do especially getting thrashed all the time and the 1.6 16v is the engine i want to drop in next for cheaper insurance with still a good bit of power.

i have sent benr a pm for a rough idea on price...... will depend on any headwork u want done or cam spec i guess

I'd day get a new/second hand engione send it to the specialists and let them build it up and dyno it and build up the ECU mapping on a stand alone ECu (since you'll be going to throtttle bodies you'll need a stand alone ECU).
Why not start with a 172 engine transplant Matt Black will sell you the bits for £1.5k plus VAT and that included the brakes and suspension dials etc.
