1.8 16v noise ( is it normal )

i just got a 1.8 16v mk1 ( 1994 ) and it whines* when i have my foot on the throttle. i cnt really hear it from the outside but its deffinatley there when inside and driving. is this normal ? or is suthing up ?

Hmmm I don't know really, I get a very slight whine from mine but I don't think it is anything tbh. Maybes it could be a belt too tight, or a pulley, or the waterpump causing it?

think its the gearbox mine whines wen i floor it is 1st and a little in 2nd. but mines had sum seruiouse abuse lol

yeh mines on 134,000 miles. so has probs had a bit of abuse. i duno it doesnt sound like its going to explode. haha. jsut a light whine. i rekon its the gearbox .. but we shall see. engine overhaul soon and new box.

wen mine gets to about 4000 it whistles like a turbo. Is that what your on about?

probably the gearbox, very common that they can go pop - but at the same time I've heard of a few which go for miles sounding like that.

Check the oil level in the gearbox as it could be low oil levels causing the noise but if you top it up asap then you could avoid any major damage.

i just had the gearbox oil changed. yeh it does kinda whistle a bit like a turbo... adds to the effect of the engine. haha. my mate whos a car mechanic thought it might be the air intake ? but im not sure :S

Mine has the sound you are describing, ur mate is right it is the air intake. Mine has a pipercross filter on it, when I got the car i thought it was a loose belt.

mine whines when your just touching the throttle to keep it moving and not actually trying to acelerate, its the gearbox, never done it untill my new one went in? only done 8k miles that box so cant see it being fuked
