100mph whine/squeal

  Yaris Hybrid
Wtf is this….? Did a “track day” today and everytime I hit 100mph I get this squealing whining noise!

It is definitely speed and not rev related and starts at about 95mph and reaches its peak at 100. Then as you lift off it dies down and disappears by about 95mph.

I think I remember reading someone else having the same thing about 18 months ago?

Any ideas?

The weird thing is that I haven’t done a “track day” for about 8 months but prior to that I had been over 100mph quite a few times and never had this problem. The noise seems to come from the centre of the dashboard. I quickly flipped my wipers in case they had stopped in a weird position that was causing some aerodynamic noise but that made no difference. Alas I never tried moving them at 100mph during the squealing.

There doesn’t appear to be anything out of place on the front of my car.

Seen a few threads about it and dont think anyone found a answer to it.

Wipers, Badly fitted front screen and empty hole under the mirror for the external temp sensor where blamed/suggested.

I seemed the hear the noise as coming from the same area, sounds alike to what you get.

This happens on mine. I havent got around to taping the hole under the drivers side wing mirror yet to see if that was it. Definitely wind related. Sometimes it occurs at 80 mph, other times I have to be going over 120 mph for it to happen.

My 182 used to have a loud beep at around 140mph indicated on the speedo. Scared the s**t out of me the first time, I thought it was the b2 telling me to stop being an idiot at first. I never worked out what it was, obviously. I couldn't tell if it was wind noise or some kind of electrical beep.

Funnily enough I have already experienced the mirror whistle and that was definitely different to this problem. By the way the mirror whistle only ever happened on one night and yes it was about 80mph. I took no action (like taping up holes) and it never came back again. Complete mystery.

This windscreen noise is a bit like a squeak or a beep. The first time I heard it I thought it was a horn beep or a police car.

Those kind of speeds are a bit dangerous in a Clio. They are not exactly designed to go that fast.

They wouldn't do it if they weren't designed to go that fast, they would limit the top end.

Believe it or not it's incredibly stable, a lot more so than my 306 GTi-6 used to feel when going that quick.

Those kinds of speeds are dangerous no matter what you are driving though, I agree.

Its really hard to describe the noise but I think it must be the same, I thought it was some kind of buzzer when I first heard it.

I thought mine was air being forced through into the cabin?

That is why the incorrectly sealed front screen was suggested I think over on the RenaultSport forum.

i had this on my car a while ago and its since sorted itself out but i remember wondering if it was something to do with the cars vents as the air was coming through at such a speed? maybe a bearing or something ?

I think you will find it is to do with your air con, i get it on mine at 125 upwards.
If you have the air com "SHUT OFF" ie so the cabbin area is sealed, no outside air coming in then it will do that noise, if you turn it on and make sure some vents are open it will stop.
its caused by air tryin to get into the cabbin part of the car.
i hope you understand what im tryin to get at? cant find the right words to explain!

Anyway if you do understand this is 100% cure for it.

It did sound like it was behind the dashboard which would support the suggestion that it was air coming through the vent system and trying to get into the cabin.

However I had my car in auto mode and set at 26 degrees. All my vents were in the open position. The AC and the air recirculation were off so the air was was just on the screen and feet and the fan speed was at I'd guess three bars. Now the thing is my heating system is always set up like that, the only possible difference between that and when I have gone over 100 before is perhaps the temperature being set lower although I am sure I have done it at those settings before i.e. last winter and it was fine.

Glad you understood what i was tryin to say :)

i ONLY get it if the air con is "off" as the off mode shuts off all vents (i always switch it to off when i park the car for the night, it stops any cold/damp air getting into the car)
If its in auto or any other fan speed or setting i dont get any noise at all.
(apart from that nice GRUNT from under the bonnet)

You can't even take it into a Renault franchise for diganosis as they will only road test it to 70mph, even though they are quite happy to give your car to a mechanic overnight where it will reach speeds beyond it's capabilities...

If only you knew the half of it, i worked for a main dealer about 18 years ago and if any high powered car's came in they would deffo get a road test, usually up the motorway been red lined in every gear!
If i ever take my car in i always sit and wait for it, even if its 3 or 4 hour's.

I think everyone knows that if you take a half decent car into a garage then it will be thrashed to near a inch of its life from cold...
