16V oil

  clio williams, Ph1 172

I know theres been lots of views on what oil to use in 16vs.

Just want a good quality oil. I change it every 4k. Been using 10w 40 semi with no problems but heard this is a bit sh*te. Whats everyone think? should i go fully synth?

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Best apperently is 15w/50 Mobil 1.

I use 15w/40 GTX Magnetex.

I had a debate on this and it doesnt REALLY matter so id recommend either, just let engine warm up before opening her up and there all the same.

Well ive had no problem with the 0W40 castrol RS but thats prob because its been run on that or similar nearly its whole life!

Matt

nope dont matter.

Mobil 0w50 is good for general driving as its got a very good VI and 15w50 is good if you constantly on the boil or at high rpm for a long time.

If you change the oil as often as 4K, do you need to swap the filter too? or just leave the current one on?

Oh no why ? I had an oil/filter change about 4 months ago, but they used the cheap semi stuff, I read the thread about Mobil 1 so thought Id change to this, have done so but left the filter alone as its quite new. Engine is deffo quieter, was this a mistake ???????????

Thanks

its not major..........if youhad only done something like a few hundred miles, dont worry.....

But in general you change the filter with oil changes.

Cant really remember how many miles Ive done, but the car was filled with this semi stuff and when I changed the oil it was about a quarter full, which was another reason I thought Id change to Mobil 1. What difference does it make not changing the filter as my cars deffo quieter so Im guessing its not done any harm [I hope !]

Cheers.

nothing apart from the oil contained in the filter and the dirt in it, but its a filter so it wont come out.

Not to worry my friend!!!! its not a problem at all!

i would worry about the 1.4 full engine after a short time though! lol

sorry i meant 1/4 full engine....

Getcha mate, maybe I did a few more miles than I thought as it isnt burning oil I dont think, or it was just sh1te oil they put in. Will see how it does on Mobil 1.

I change my oil every 3K, but then I dont drive it often...and when I do it gets driven hard...

...and I use 10/40 GTX Magnatec

Im guessing you do the filter too ? Ive only done 7K in mine and its had three oil changes, thats only because the previous two I didnt know what they put in it and the third was me trying Mobil 1 for the first time, but unfortunately I was lazy/stupid and left the oldish filter on but it seems fine ! Just running the petrol down and am going to try some slick 50 to clean the injectors out and hopefully it should be running sweet !

just dont use the Slick 50 oil treatment mate, it used to (possibly still does) contain solid small particles of ptfe

ptfe is a good low friction thing, but solid particles in oil isnt good, and ive also heard it can clog in places such as in the filter...

No, Im using the stuff you put in the fuel tank when nearly empty, fill up blah blah and its supposed to clean all the sh*te out through the fuel line/injectors etc, not gonna use any oil additives as I think decent oil has all it wants in it ?!?! No idea about 80W/140 mate, whats that !?!?
