lol another 17 year old after a 172, i got a 172 at 17 and when i posted it here got bombarded with comments considering i was paying £1300 a year but then aswell im not from the UK, im from Gibraltar :) Best of Luck!!!

lol at some of the comments. Just because he's 17 doesn't mean he's going to kill himself/crash it. Clios aren't even quick cars for a start.

If he was getting himself something like a superbike then some of the comments would be more acceptable.

if he's going on say he's dads insurance with fulll no claims as a named driver i recon about £1500 - 2k the very max, i got quoted a grand if i wanted to get insured on my brothers golf 2.0 16v and he's 24 with 0 no claims bonus.

I had a 172 at 17. I'm still here. Now have a westfield at 18. Insurance isn't a problem for me though.

If you can afford to waste £4k on insurance do it. Personally i'd get something that was fun to drive with a small engine. S1 106 rallye for example.

thing is, everyone crashes their first car, even if its just a scrape, very few peoples first car goes unscathed, is it worth throwing 172 money into the arena with that in mind cuz if its a big crash, ur absolutley screwed mate.

A damn site quicker than the 1.0 - 1.3 cars most people have as there first cars.

Ive had my first car for over 2 years now and its never even had a scratch on it. I think getting a 172 at 17 is just silly. Mostly becuase of his license. 6 points will come around so easily at that age with a 2.0ltr clio, then it bye bye license

My first car went completely unscathed in the 2 years I had it.. so thats not true of everyone.

It wasn't a 172 tho, was a 1.2 and fast enough for when I was learning to drive :)

Most people are just jealous of the fact that your mate is in the position to get a 172 at 17.

Personally I wouldn't because of only 6 points on your license for first 2 years and the insurance premium.

I wouldnt pay anything like £4k for insurance, really it's just not worth it. Just be patient and wait until it drops in price and get some ncb. £4k thats nearly the price of the car your buying in just ONE year. I couldn't justify spending that kinda cash just on insurance.

At the end of the day, yes its a nippy car (not quick by all means) but quicker than your normal 1.0 micra. But it's just a car at the end of the day, i'd rather spend the £4k for insurance on something like uni fees.

depends if u wana pay big insrance mate. im 19 with 2 years ncb and 3points and im looking to get 172 next year. but cheapest i can get rite at moment is 2300 fully comp, gona wait till feb when im 20 see if it goes down atall.

A 17 year old can't afford £5.8k for a car, so i doubt he has to get worried about that.

Fleet insurance sounds like the solution, but isn't there a minium age for that? Getting insurance on his own policy will definetly require a dad loan!

insuring a 172 can sometimes be as much as insuring a modified 1.2 as i found out. Just tell him to take it easy if he goes ahead and gets one

i think its a bit of a silly idea.

im not a bad driver and i dont try and drive particularly fast but i've scared myself a few times in my 1.1 fiesta, onece when i nearly said hello to a roundabout and another when i almost gave the front end of a 3 series a nice hug. the fact that i couldnt really go that fast meant i had time to get out of it, if i had a 172 i dont think i'd have realised it happened. it will be far less forgiving, he might think he's the dogs danglies and cant do anything wrong but not the case as i found out.

just a suggestion but its better to build up your driving experiece in something more sensible and plus its something to work for.

just my two cents

Never realised how many people there were from essex. How come no one spots me?

Back on subject - Depends on the maturity of the drive tbh - Insurance companies will always rape young male drivers so it will cost you a fortune - but if your sensible then why not if you can afford it.

If you can afford it and think ur mature enough to go and drive a 172 well go for it, iv got a 172 insured here in Gibraltar, got it when i was 17, payed £1300 a year including green card (insurance to drive in spain) the car is under a fleet so insurance may be a lil bit cheaper but im enjoying the car alot and im keeping to my limits, and iv realised the car can bite back at you when you least expect it so becareful a lil bit but like i said before, best of luck!!

oi pe-narse [that is a form of penis and arse btw] you can kill ya self in a 1.2 [lok at my previous post] and you will findwhat the new owner of my 1.2 old shape clio did. rolled itfor a few metres well prob about hundread or so and then had to crawl from the sunroof, now put that in perspective of 1.2-2.0l and im sure he would of been goin a lot quicker and ther for dead.
Basically im trying to say you can kil your self in a 1.2 1.4 1.8 wht ever but like most of the guys here say it WILL be a good way to go I think:S

I put my 1st car through a stone wall and into a field within 3 weeks of owning it !!

Although it was more then just inexperience that caused it.

Really did learn my lesson and am now 21 and have had my 182 for 2 years.... with not even so much as a curbed wheel.

I think your first car should be a shed, crash it and learn from your experience... then buy yourself a nice car.

He'll know himself better then i do so its up to him.

You can get killed walking to the shop, doesn't mean I don't go outside :rasp:

Get a RS clio if you can afford it, go for it. Although according to people on here, you'll end up in a hedge and then lose license for having too many points.

So beware :clown:

a good driver knows his limits, if you understand the differences in driving conditions, how a car behaves in a corner/roundabout etc then you should be ok.

the only thing you need to watch for is dont judge corners by gears, where your 1.2 goes round a corner flat out in 4th (100mph) a 172 would do it at 115mph, which is the reason most make mistakes

look around mate and try and get each insurer to beat the other and you will save alot buddy go for it i say!!! i have crashed ever under powered car i have ever owned because if was alwasy being silly trying to race bigger engine cars since i went onto 172's not had one in nearly 7 years now touch wood
