172/182 - How Many Miles A Week?

  03 Clio 1.6 16v Dynamique
Guys,

New office at work is just over 30 miles away, meaning I'll be doing 61 odd miles a day just to get to work and back.

So very tempted to trade the Dynamique in for a 172, but mileage and fuel usage puts me off. Ideally I'd get a diesel obviously [or a new job ;)] but new job isn't really realistic just yet as its a good place with prospects, and I'm an uber petrol head, a Diesel doesn't really interest me one bit.
I think if I had to, I'd look at a reasonable A3 Tdi or something similar, but Diesels seem very overpriced for what they are.

...Thus leading me back to a Ph2 172, however I wouldn't want to rack mileage up in a nice 172, I would feel bad and I wouldn't get a decent return when I come to sell it either.

I currently do about 250 miles a week just purely on work and back, forgetting evening + weekend driving, and I spend just under £90 a week on fuel on average I'd say.

What do you lot spend a week, and how many miles do you cover?
Will give me a good idea what to expect.

Many thanks,

Pete.

I do 50 miles a day to work and back, but because its a long run my PH2 172 averages 37mpg. I spent about £200 a month on fuel

My 51 plate 172 had 101k on it when it got written off, but still ran sweet as a nut

just worrk it out

your milage per month is say 1200 adding 50 miles a week personal miles

you will roughtly get 33mpg thats 33 miles to 3.8 litres

8.6 miles per litre ish

thats 140 litres of fuel

vpower is £1.02 per litre

so about £143 ish of fuel per month

My Cup has covered a 60 mile round trip commute like you're now having to do, every working day since new...and it's never missed a beat.

I regularly see early to mid 40's mpg, and at almost 86k miles now, it is running sweeter than it ever has done.

Still barely needs a splash of oil between services (which I've done every 6k from new instead of the advised 12k), and makes me grin every time I drive it.

:approve:

My commute used to be 60 a day but now it's down to just under 50 since moving. The 172 is pretty decent on fuel.

Never understood people who don't drive their cars for fear of puttin gmilage on it. If it was some exotica fair enough, but at the end of the day it's a Clio! Mine's probably worth less than a grand under what it would be with low miles, but I've used it loads and definitely got more than a grands worth of fun out of it.

Or alternatively, buy one and just keep changing it every year :)

Was doing 700miles a week in mine at first, it loved it, all A and B roads for 13 months.

Got 38mpg no hassle and that was flying tbh.

Is there anything you've got to ensure stays fresh/clean to keep it around the 40mpg mark?
I dont get that now in my Dynamique, let alone in a 172.

Is the key regular Air filter or oil changes, or something similar?

I check my tyres, oil, screenwash and engine coolant, but doesn't really affect MPG anyway.

What's the secret ;)

Cheers,

Pete.

70mph cruise control would see over 40mpg in my 182 easy but fook that how boring.

The secret is smooth driving and very little acceleration.

  Clio PRIVILEGE 1.4
i need to start driving 10 miles a week and thats it !
work is 15 mins walk away and taking my car would be stupid plus no parking spaces, only get the chance to use the car on the weekend and even then i dont got anywhere too far out :S

im still amazed at my maths lol

4.55 litres per English gallon. Looks like you quoted a U.S. gallon.

Based on your figures fuel will cost £168.83 per month.

luckily i hav a work van bein a electrician, so my cup only does about 50miles a week:rasp: and thats if i take her out.

  R35 GTR
I only need to do 14 miles per week to get to and from work and around 20 picking the girlfriend up.

So 34 miles a week. Why do i need a car.....:S???

Why not get a DCI Clio £35 road fund and cheap running costs

I wouldn't have a petrol and be paying my own fuel bill if I did 450 miles a week.

Thats what £2.5k (assuming 40mpg) in fuel per year a diesel would be what £1.6k (60mpg) plus the saving on road fun that a fair bix extra in your hand just for the wanting to own a petrol say over £100 a month can you not think of other things to do with £100 a month?

Agree 100% - the brake pedal is the enemy of good mpg...but don't forget the forward planning though.

Like when you're coming up on a roundabout, plan your approach so that by the time you get there, the gap you saw developing on the other side is ready for you and you can drive straight on through.

"Planning to stop, but looking to go."

That probably gives me 1-2 mpg alone.

  172
I'm buyin a 182 the week after next... got money to spend and a car to buy.

I will be doing 68 miles a day plus my private stuff.. Brum to Wolves and Back.

I am glad you guys said its resonable to do this.

I also dont give a shite about the re sale value- although a great car they're not the sort of prestige car that will hold their values loads anyway.

I cant wait

11 per day if i'm in the company wagon once i get to work.

could be up to 500 a week though, if i'm out and about on site. :(

  Clio 172 mk2
I probably do under 50 miles per week in my 172 so doesn't cost much to run.

Still seeing mid 30s mpg on my commute which is pretty good:D

  Audi TT 225
Petrol never botheres me in the 172.... Work pays for it all! :D
Was doing about 200 per week but less now.

You must be driving like a big girl then if you can get 40 mpg.

:)

If I drive to work I do about 60 miles a week. if I cycle I only do about 20 miles a week.

On the way back from Leeds getting my remap done I managed to get 42mpg averaging between 70 and 80 mph. My Trophy never got anywhere near that!

At uni I do about 10-20/ week!
At home its about 180/week. I do about 12k/ year in total, and the Clio is quite cheap to run.

  Clio 182
I'm doing a few too many recently, maybe 500 miles a week.

seems to have averaged on 30-34 mpg, but I dont really drive slowly, so its not too bad.

  clio 182 black /gold
I filled my car up 16 days ago in Blackpool and the car is under half full. I have done 200 miles ish.

  M4 LCI, X1, ZX10R
I do around 45miles a day to work and back, plus site mileage (around 50-100 a week).

I use the Mrs's car twice a week, but still normally do around 350miles a week in mine with private mileage.

I will soon be doing 65miles a day plus site mileage, it's not to much of a concern when your doing around 37-39mpg.

  Leon Cupra 300
33 mile round trip for work driving like miss daisy returns 40mpg.

Evenings and weekends it gets spanked but still get just over 300 miles from a tank and fill up every 10days or so which is normally 37 quid in v-power. Its lots better than my old Escort ha.

  LY 200
At the moment icant give a weekly milage as well it stays put in garage most of time but i may have a new job in which like you il be doing a 60 mile round trip for a few months until i get given a company car.

Think il stick it out and keep the sport though rather than changing to a diesel for that space of time. There not that bad in mpg if driven right anyway mate.

I rekon 40/50 quid a week in fuel.
