172/182 Manifold swap?

  Elise S1 B&C 140
Ive heard the performance gains of the 182 over the older 172 are all down to a new manifold, helping the engine breathe better. Is this correct if i fitted a 182 manifold to a 172 would i get the 10BHP increase, or is my mate talking rubbish (as usual).

Cheers

Rich

The exhaust manifold is where most of the 10bhp comes from but they're not a straight swop

A 172 manifold is 4-1
A 182 manifold is 4-2-1

Is fitting the whole exhaust do-able? i guess the manifold would bolt onto the head the same?, and all the mounts will be in the same place?

ive heard you'll have to drop the rear of the subframe to get it off and fix the new one. you'll have to fabricate a link pipe between the 182 manifold and the existing system. im sure someone will be along soon to tell more.

Goders - The whole exhaust won't go on as all 172's have a spare wheel well in the boot whereas 182's have a flush boot floor to create space for the two back boxes

The 182 exhaust isn't really a good design the twin back boxes are purely for looks not performance, as said above the manifold is where the performance changes have occured

i think a 4-2-1 gives an increase in torque, a 4-1 gives the best top end power. i'm guessing that wherever renault found 10 bhp it was at the expense of torque and the manifold is to compensate?

Hardly worth it for the money, just strip the car first. You'll definitely notice the difference with a bit of weight saving.

^i would say if you can get a cheap one it's well worth doing! you can still use the car day to day.

They range from silly money to pence

Be patient and one will turn up for the right money

Its worth doing if your planning loads of other mods and plan to keep the car a while. If not, dont bother
