172 advice

  S4 Avant
Need a few opinions on this as I am more than likely being a total fool. So, ive been looking at a blue ph1 172 on ebay today, it has 12 hours remaining and is at 500 at the minute. Im very tempted to stick in an offer as the price is quite low. However... the car is down south, and im up north so cant go and see it, before deciding to bid.

Ive spoke to the seller and they seem pretty genuine, 100% feedback and the likes. The cars on 91k, the seller says it has history up to 70,000 at which point they started to service themselves. Im always a bit sceptical when people say this though. A positive though is that they say the belts were changed recently and stamped in the book. Again, im not so sure of this.

Being a 10 year old + clio, its more than likely going to be a bucket of s**t regardless. However, im very tempted to go for it, if its at the right price, and if it goes balls up and its a bag of hammers i could brake it or run it into the ground. I want something as a project, just as a second car, to try and learn a few things.

Im fully expecting a dont bother going for it response, as thats what my head is saying. However, my heart really fancies a little bargain.

Opinions...

Of they've got receipts for parts I.e. Oil and filter etc for what they have done them selves and the car seems ok go for it. The fact belts have been done is a positive. Also if you get it for just over £500 then if it died on you a week later you could strip it for parts and sell on (worse case scenario). Mileage isn't to bad for a car of that age in fact it's probably a bit low (on the national average) and these engines seem quite strong.

No I dont know it mate, I just looked on ebay ;) lol

If it goes really cheap then as was said by andy, if it did die you could just break it for bits.

One thing that you should think about is it states it needs a new Dephaser pulley, they're about £150 new (i think?) and that would mean having the cam belt done again.....costly unless you can do it yourself. Properley :)

Im going to give this one a miss, its now going for over 600, so IMO not worth it.

As said its going to need a new dephaser and cambelt more than likely, and although parts are not a problem as i get them cheaper through work. I think by the time its up to a decent standard itl be over 1k. Car would be around 650, then the 200 mile trip down, then new tax. Thats already going to be pushing on 900.

Il keep looking out for bargains, unless i can shift my current car and get one as a main car.

There is a very cheap 106 gti very local to me, which im going to keep my eye on though.

Cheers, for the feedback

Did you go for it in the end? 900 isnt bad for a phase 1, where you know the belt has been done

Having said that, there might well be more expenditure

the exposure from this thread wont have helped, when you locate a possible 172 keep it quiet ;)

Good luck with the hunt

Thats why i didnt create a thread until the latter stages of the bidding ;)

Hope it was someone on here who won it though, just so i can see how it turned out.
