172 breather pipe and black box thingy!!!

Hi can anyone tell me what the black box is infront of the front drivers wheel, it has a pipe coming from the back of the air intake manifold, it also has a wire going into it which sudgests a sensor of some sorts. I need to know if it is ok to remove and if i need to cap anything off if i do!

Carbon canister, safe to remove. Use the search and there is loads of threads about it and which pipes to connect and bloke off
