172 buying advice.....

Im off to see a 172 Mk2 tomorrow. Any advice of what to check / look out for apart from the usual car checks.

Also, how can I check how much warranty is left. Engine number and a call to Reno?

Any advice welcome!

Ring Renault should tell you how much of there warently you have left or just work it out from when it was registered.

Normal problem 4k rattle, subframe hitting the engine, washerjets not working or leaking and normal electical gremlines check it hasnt been crash repaired on the cheap as well you never know.

edde, cheers. Im not really sure where I stand with the warranties and parallel cars. If its 2 or 3 years. Would be good to get it confirmed from Reno.

Imports have a 3yr warently although you need to send some letter of to them have a search its been posted a few times.

(except cars from Cyprus which have a 2 yr warently as there not EU cars. some inports are cyprus one you need to check as its not obvious)

Dont forget EU imports might not have a Uk alarm as only Uk models have to have them fitted.

Ok, stupid question time. How do you know it has an alarm instead of just the remote central locking and the immobilser? Just taken a look at a car I am sure is an import but didnt know how to prove it. I looked for the ultrasonic sensors for the alarm but couldnt see any but then I dont know what it looks like.

No such thing as a stupid question if you didnt know the answer.

To tell if it has an alarm loook on the front windscreen pillars if there are little ultrasonic detecters then its got an alarm (there about 2cm long and round on little brackets). If its an import then it may have some other locction for the detecters so maybe best leaving the window open lock the car and lean in the car or try and rock it and you will set it off.

Thers a little red light on the bit where the gear leaver is as well which will flash.

You can get an alarm fited for about £200 for a decient one I think so might be worth trying to haggle the seller down. If they bought from an importer and arent clued up they migh not know its not got an alarm so might be worth trying to knock some money of saying you need an alarm fitted.

You deffo get three years with an eu, but like edde said you need to call renault uk and tell em, they will check the cars origin and if eu they will give you the extra year.

You need copy of:

logbook

purchase receipt ( dosnt have to be the original invoice )

service book showing stamps of uk dealer

utility bill

and i think thats it matey

you will also need to make sure the service book was stamped by the original dealer the importer got the car from as iv just found out which is a pain in the arse

Cheers guys! That is very helpfull.

I couldnt see any ultrasonic detectors and the only flashing light was on the dashboard. So Im sure that it was an import.

To be honest all the cars Im finding around here are imports and the prices they are asking I might as well go to Motorpoint and get an new imported one from them.

Thats what I ended up doing. 2nd hand values on 172s where I am were silly, for not much more its better to have a brand new one.

Mind you, where do you stop: a 182s only £700 more than a 172 at motorpoint...
