Just found out that renault have made a revision to the cambelt kit and that the part number now ends in a 5 not a 4 as the kit I ordered ends in. I got the kit from ktec a few months back. The guy at renault said they don't know what has been changed .... anyone know ?

  Lots of Alfas
I heard from somewhere they changed the lower roller/tensioner for a better one as it easily wore out and rumbled.

Sounds like the same issue as me, they said one of the pullys didnt fit right as it was a few mm to big or something, they are ordering the correct parts for me (the also ordered the 2 replacement little covers that I didnt even know about, shouldnt that be part of the kit if your gonna need it for a cam belt change ??)

Soon as k-tec open on tuesday im gonna be on the phone to them as it deffo the wrong part ? on their website it says for 1998-2006 172/182's mine is a 2002 !

Ive had to leave my car through in glenrothes and arrange a lift back to edinburgh as they didnt realise it was wrong part until they had already stripped the car... and its not a good idea (apart from costs) to fit an already tensioned cam belt aparently :( and with the holidays just now my car is stuck there until wedensday now

K-tec, expect a call !! I thought they were clio specialists :S

In dialogys, it gives 7701476675 for F4R 736 build code after 010403. Before that, it's 7701476674.

My car was delivered 04/02 so built roughly early 02 at a guess, and it's well into 010403+. It's no use putting different dates in to work out when the change was from, so check your own engine. The number's on your V5, C000000.

Doubt if Renault used them in consecutive order so the engine build code's probably more crucial than the date.

Don't know what the difference is either, but from what you say, it's important enough to need the right kit. FWIW, the pulleys are listed separately so you likely don't need a full new kit.

Hang on, before build 010403, one pulley is 7700107150 ROLLER TENSION C2 (X) dimension = 10.22
after build 010403 the same pulley is 8200064664 GALET ENROULEUR (X) dimension = 17.
Dimension (X) is the internal diameter for the bolt.
early bolt = 7703002162 BOLTM10X55 SP (X) dimension 10.22
later bolt = 7700107868 MOUNTING BOLT LA (X) dimension 17

So, purely at a guess, your engine has a build code after 010403, and the KTec kit contains the earlier pulley 10.22mm internal hole diameter, but you need the later one at 17mm.

correct, the ID is different as they each sit on a different sized spigot which the bolt goes through.

The spigot supports the inner bearing race rather than the bolt itself which just clamps the idler to the spigot and block.

Bit of a s**t for you, did they not offer a hire car?

They probably would have but.

1) it wasnt their fault it was mine (or rather k-tec's  )
2) the dont have courtesy cars.

They did offer me the number for a good taxi firm though hah !

pictures?

Not that these help much as they're exactly the same picture for both, but the tensioner in question is number 16 (if you can even see the numbers). Not even sure it means the bolts are actually 10.22mm and 17mm, or if it just refers to the correct bolt for each application.

Well that explains it. I spoke to Mike aswell (helpfull guy !) and he has said basically the same, The 674 is for the early models the 675 kit is for the later (my) model of clio :(

From what you have said about the pully being a different size, that is exactly what the garage said to me. The kit I have is going back to k-tec the correct kit is already ordered by the garage.

Thanks for the effort in finding this out ! Much appreciated !:approve:

A bit jumbled (just out of bed) but it got me thinking, couldn't resist it!

At least BenR managed to clarify it with few words!

Looks like the pulleys may even be the same outside diameter and just the spigot on the inside differs.

correct, outside same, inside diff.

Might of just have been due to some failures of the 10mm bolt which was fixed on later cars.

Re: 172 Cambelt Change
I had mine done a few weeks ago and my garage already had the tools and got them from one of their suppliers.

It's a 5 hour job  (less than 30 mins for a Saxo)

Bits used for the job:
A "Timing Belt Kit" - the parts are

R7701476675 Kit Distribution £123.59 (inc VAT)
R7700106271 Core Plug £7.26 (inc VAT)
R7700274026 Plug £3.20 (Inc VAT)

(Two seals are needed for the back of camshafts because
the originals have to be removed to get tool in) (?)

£134.05 total from the Renault dealer

KTec must be in for a few returns if they're selling kits suitable for cars with engines built up to (roughly) late 2001 to everyone.

The later one must fit far more cars.

Let me know how you get on..

I now have to find the reciept as I bought the kit about 4-5 months ago in preperation for the cambelt change. I am sure I paid for it on a CC though so should be able to get a statement, and presumably k-tec keep records of all the parts they sell.
