172 conversion Answers Needed!!!

Got my clio booked in for a 172 swap but i wont be around whilst its gettinf done so want to know if i have all the right stuff for when it goes into Torque!

Have so far-Engine,gearbox,driveshafts,ECU,Full loom and key

Anybody thats done this conversion know if im missing anything?
Also if i need to change my hubs what happens to the front suspension set up that i have will it still fit or not??

You need 172 suspension to fit the hube ir you ned to bodge the normal struts to fit but there not ideal. You need the calipers disks you also need the dashboard.
Depending on what spec your going for you need either the steaing rack or a shorter aux belt and remove the PAS pump. Radiator also.
I'm not sure if you need the lower arms.
j3ned or 16V_jon are the people who will know ever last part as they have done the swops before.

IMO you need 172 hubs and suspension (front)

and you defo need better front brakes!!!

Im getting a Hi-Spec brake kit once the conversion is done,so will the Suspension and hubs be all that i need then?

Thats what im thinking about going for,but then what about the rear suspension since this will still be the standard 1.4 set up with mighty drums!!
 
Standard 172 hubs are 54mm spacing it depends what Clio ages you have Mk 2 pahse 2 ie triangular lghts all seem to run 58mm hubs. The Mk2 1 run a variaty the 1.2's run 52mm usually the 1.4's can run 54mm. There no hard and fast rule more of a better chance.
if you have 54mm hubs spacing then your shcoks will fit but there not the ideal setup. I'd always recomend upgrading to either 172 stock setup or better still aftermarket 172 shocks designed for the job.

edde?? whats the bolt spacing on a 172 hub??

on a 182 "cup derivative" its 60mm

i was under the impression 172 = 58mm??

Gad i've got the 4 standard shocks that i took off my 172 if they are any use to you as a stop gap and i've also got my standard front brakes if they are any use as a stop gap? If you can make use of them i'll drop them into Torque for you if you like? Whens it booked in?

54mm I'd just been to measure then earlir I'll check again later when I'm a bit warmer.

Might need the front shocks and brakes from you,are the hubs still attached as well? (How cheeky is that) lol
Its booked in for the 5th of Dec but im dropping the car and engine off on sat the 3rd cause i will be back down to Leeds on the 4th

Will pm the guys who have had this conv done for more answers and info!

Edde my clio is a 02 plate mrk2 phs2 1.4 but the hubs on it are from a megane 1.4 if that makes any difference!

Also are there 172 hubs with and without ABS on them?

how much does all this cost? I want to know a price for EVERYTHING supplied and fitted (I'll be on airbag suspension though, With High spec Brakes) The car is a 1.2 RN :( IS the dash necessary?

I paid £900 for all the stuff i got,but looks like im short of some stuff,and i was quoted £1000 for getting it all swapped over but thats up here in Scotland,not many places half decent to do it!

The conversion is very easy providing you have everything eg

engine
box
loom
speedoclocks
ECU
UCH
plip key
decoder ring
overide code and chassis number off donor car
shafts
hub
knuckles
discs
calipers
exhaust
fuel pump
fuel pipes
eng mounts
radiator
water pipes
subframe

The only thing people struggle on is when they think the conversion is done and they try to turn the engine over. The engine turns over but doesnt fire up are it doesnt even attempt to turn over. This is down to the UCH control unit under the N/S dash, just above the bonnet release handle. Its a black fuse board about 3inch x 8inch. This in itself is an ECU and must either be programmed in using the donor vehicles overide code ar renewed and synchronised into the donor cars ECU & plip key - also check the decoder ring and if thats knackered replace that to and if need be the plip key as well. If you dont have the donor cars chassis number or reg to obtain the overide code your in trouble - all 4 items must be off the same car ( plip / ecu / uch & decoder )

You do have to use 172 shafts / 172 hubs / 172 knuckes / 172 discs and 172 calipers - there is no way round it.

Thats just the disc and the caliper! I will give Cit-Ren a call on monday and see if they can send me the front hubs as well as the subframe!!
