Guys

back to basics question?

Just wondering what the differences are between a 172 and a CUP? in terms of performance/prices new and used/equipment level?

This has been gone over 1000s of times.. please either do a search or visit the cliosport main page and look at the specs of the two models.

172 has leather seats, cup is slightly lower, lighter, fabric seats, cup splitter, thinner glass, wider track etc

By your logic then, the 1.6 16v Clio is a limited edition. There were less of those sold than Cups......

Lets not start a Cup versus 172 debate again. Lets just answer the guys question without ant personal input. Ill (try) to go first.

The Cup is the same as the 172 in that it has the same engine and gearbox. The Cup version was stripped of non-essential items such as;

Xenon headlamps

Leather/suede interior

Climate Control

Sound deadening (not all of it!)

Heat reflective windscreen

ABS,ESP Traction Control

Boot Net

Mats

Later 172s also came with Cruise Control with speed limiter.

The Cup originally came in one Colour, Mondial Blue. Towards the end of the production run, it was also offered in Iceburg Silver.

The Cup has several suspension tweaks including stiffer springs, damping rates and as a result is slighlty (3mm) lower. Also, the Cup came with lightweight Speedline Turini alloy wheels with a different offset giving it a slightly wider track.

In adition, the Cup came with a small front splitter and enlarged rear spoiler, to increase the aesthetic appeal.

Thats about all I know, off the top of my head. Im not going to quote stats because that is another can of worms. The Cup is faster on paper by a few tenths to 60 and just shy of a second to the 100. The handling of the Cup is also better than the 172. On the road however, there is little difference (couldnt help chucking in my opinion, sorry).

If Ive missed anything Im sure someone will add to it.....

The Cup does have I believe some kind of special appeal, i think it does stand out more than a normal 172 and is seen as a kind of limited edition (although officially i guess it is not). I personally am a 172 owner, not a cup owner, I think all the talk of the cup being faster than a 172 is a load of c*ap. On the real road all it takes is for a c*ap gear change in either car and the other owner has the edge, i.e all down to the driver. Its exactly the same engine, therefore there is never really going to be any significant difference. I personally went for the 172 because of the leather and aircon, i had the extra money and was prepared to pay it, i dont think for 1 second my car is any better than a cup, i just feel happy to be lucky enough to own either of the two cars.

Ok Im gonna tidy this up now and get rid of all the Nice Jolly Comments thats been going on lol

Forgot to mention that Cup also came with two cans of tyre foam in lieu of a spare alloy, and had no rear headrests. Also lost a few airbags from the seats iirc. And no engine cover. Erm... I think thats about it lol!!

The cup is 5mm lower at the front and 7mm at the rear however it has tighter tolerances than the 172 at plus or minus 10mm the 172 has a tolerance of 10.5mm

The max tolerance difference between sides is 5mm.

Yes I am a boring

Also, the cup does not have side airbags...(all because of the extra weight) Hand on heart, it is a case of personal choice, and I would loved to have bought a normal 172 for all the toys, but then if Id bought a 172, I may have been saying now that I wish Id bought a cup...so it is horses for courses, and I wish you well in your choice. Both cars are good cars, its all a matter of choice. :D
