172 cup



  black golf v6 4 motion


i am wanting to know what people think of the cup as i am getting mine on wed 10/3/2004 big step from 1.2 16v dynamique?

any stories?

Yeah. Ive got one and its fu*king great!!! For the money there is nothing to touch it for performance, economy, handling and dare I say looks! Easily capable of scalping some more exotic machinery

Coming from a 1.2 it should feel like a rocket ship, but make sure you take it easy at first and if the back end starts to overtake you..dont lift off!

I came from a Clio MTV 1.2 8v (60 bhp).

Even sticking to 3000 revs during the first couple of weeks it was A HELL OF A LOT faster that my old car.

Ive gone from a 1.2 Expression Plus to a 2.0 16v 172 Sport, and Im only 19 so Im not as experienced as other drivers!!

Mike.. more of a question than a comment! I thought that lifting off the power gradually would return grip and bring the back end in line (whilst steering into the skid) is this different on a cup?

I came from a 155 Bravo. It felt a hell of a lot quicker and the cornering was amazing compared to the boat of a bravo. I used to have a S1 106 Rallye, and the Cup compares for smiles and handling, but man is it ever quicker than the old Rallye.

Youll have a blast mate.

its the lifting off that causes the backend to go. if it starts to slide u gotta put ur foot down!

Its all about weight transfer.. more weight over a wheel gives more grip, with you lift off the throttle the back weight on the back wheels gets lighter.
 


I fully understand the physics guys but the guy said that the arse end swung out and then not to lift off?

You really dont want to get that close to the limits on the road. If you are going fast enough to experience lift-off oversteer, you are going too fast for the corner anyhow. Rally drivers and racers can use the trait to their advantage, on a stage or circuit, but the average or even fairly proficient driver should stay well away from it on the street.

Save it for a track day or an airfield...
 


I think the valver has better lift off oversteer characteristics than the 172 and it turns in better with more feel of the road. The 172 scares me a little when the back end gets loose as im never sure if it will suck back in again with a lift off the gas pedal. Maybe the cup is better for this with the stiffer suspension anyone want to let me have a go in theirs? [;)]

Mitsi let me give you a physics lesson.

A car almost always enters a skid because it is carrying too much speed for the conditions. To correct a skid be it rear wheel skid or front wheel skid you have to correct the factor that is causing the car to skid i.e excess speed. By gradually decreasing speed (rather than a sudden lift off) this will allow the tryes contact patch to return and eventually the car will regain control assuming that you have steered correctly. This phenomoneon (sp) is refered to in EVO this month with the 182 group test and also by the previous poster. And if you choose not to believe any of us you could always try reading roadcraft. :)

Wee hey! That was one cool little car!
It should have been called a Renault Clio NCBE (No Claims Builder Edition). A cracking little first car that was, and it came complete with the 172 headlights too.

It always lived in the shadow of Jons Pug 106 XSi though - that was the most fun you could have with 1.4 litres of displacement that was. No R5 GTT arguments - their w**k in comparison.

Yeah that 106 was a smart little car! Wish I have bought one instead the the VTR and saved a few bob!
