172 gearbox oil change

  Defender 110
changed my gearbox oil yesterday 75/90 and the gearbox feels a little notchy/stiff to normal.
Had a search on here and people say, stay away from 75/90. and go for GL5 grade 75/80?

can i get this from any parts store? (halfords, Motor factor ect)

i would order the oil off opie or simular, but i dont want to wait. i want to change it agian today.

any recommendations of what oil i should get?

thank you in advance :)

  Corsa Van. Meh.
I'd stick with 75/80. Although when I changed mine I couldn't get any in Halfords.

Are U sure GL5 is recommended for JC gearboxes? Renault suggests API GL4+ 75w-80 gearbox oil (ELf Tranself TRX or TRJ or NFJ).
GL5 contains large amount of very agressive compounds (active chlorine, phosporour etc.), this may cause chemical corrosion.

if you've not changed it in a few years it's probably worth giving it some love.
as for which oil, i was sure i was going to use 75/80 until both fred and agency transmissions (who rebuilt my box) said 75/90, so i've been using that for the last couple months. no problems.
i wouldn't take renault as gospel. i'd pay more attention to what fred says :)

i put castrol 75/80 (that we use in land rovers, £30 a litre though!) in mine as was notchy so thought i would change the oil, what a difference! slick gear changes and no crunchy gears, whatever was in it before was really thick! think it was gear oil not transmission oil lol

I noticed a difference changing my gearbox oil, no idea if it had been done in the past but it feels much better for it. I used Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75W-80 (3 litres) :approve:
