172 Idling

  Subaru WRX/BMWe30 Touring

Do the 172s have an uneven idle? Was standing outside my 172 with the engine running the other day and noticed that from the sound of the exhaust it sounded as though it was coughing and spluttering a bit.

Looking at the rev counter when it is idling it seems fine but have heard the 172s have a rough idle due to them being highly tuned - any truth in that?

Yes, they all do it, cats are very restrictive meaning its likely to cough and splutter more when you first start her up

The idle is nothing to do with the engine itself its the tree hugging enviromentalists who forced Renault to program the engine with no enrichment when cold (well not much).

The engine could idle normally if you ECU maps had been made differently, but emmisions would have been higher.
