172 Impressing friends

  S3, Polo
A lot of my petrolhead mates who've been in my Clio don't appear too bothered (probably because they drive REALLY fast cars).

Though the wife thinks I drive like a nutter and thinks most cars are fast... :)

I remember a work collegue in his mid 30's take my car round the block, heard my car bounce off the limiter and when he came back said 'bloody hell this things well fast, thought it was only a 1.6!' lol I had to inform him it was a 2.0 with about 165bhp!

I dont tend to drive fast with other people in the car as most people i know arent into the car thing at all, only a few selected friends and they usually have their own cars. If i floor it with someone who isnt into it they think im a boyracer and that im showing off. Especially as everyone outside the car world automatically thinks that of me anyway when they see my wheels and the lack of interior lol.

The last girl i was seeing said she thought my car was loud and looked embarrassing with boy racer stripes (i have a RB with stripes)

I took her out for a drive and she still says its loud and embarrassing...but I can tell now she actually loves it

One of my best mates actually says, "I can't believe how good this car is." pretty much every time we go anywhere :) I let him drive it at the Nurburgring and it made his year lol!

Most non-petrolhead mates seem to like it and one female friend said that it looked really cute (RB182 with stripes!)

went out in a for a quick drive in a mates c2 gt and he was saying "its quite fast aint it " and was sayg yeah its quite nippy. then when we got back i said to him "do you fancy a blast in mine. his face was pricless when i opened it up a bit lol.

Lol my mate swapped his BMW 318i for a 206 XSi and was really eager for me to drive it so I could see how good it was. I tried to look impressed, but it really was quite slow! He said, "surely your car isn't that much quicker is it?" He didn't say that after I let him drive it :)

I give it an occasional booting if I've got a passenger that likes it, still gets smiles and praise a year on.

Most people see a Clio and think very little of it, modded 1.2/girl's car/toy car etc and very few people I know have heard of Renault Sport, so it comes a bit of surprise when there's a bit of clear road ahead to open it up.

I think that's why my friends are always surprised by my car, because none of them are into cars. In fact the only person I know who is into cars is my dad and he doesn't seem to think any high performance cars feel quick, including Ferraris and TVR's that he's driven.

The only comments I've had off my mates is "It feels about as my (Fiesta) Zetec" and "It's as quick as my (Astra) SXi", haha. This was when i first got it and was giving it some whenever possible. They had been telling me for weeks and weeks before i bought it that "a Clio would be s**t and slow", saying that they thought i was making a Clio 172 up and that it didn't really exist :( I think they were a bit sheepish to admit it was a bit faster than what they drive around in. They come around since, but it's taken 3 months!

I've had a few "what engines in this" comments off mates, and thats just driving around generally not even booting it.

They do feel pretty quick as a passanger. When i'd been out in somebodys RS Clio when I had my 1.2 I remember thinking how quick it felt.

Now my car doesn't feel that quick, its pretty quick over 5K but under that it doesn't feel that special. Turbo'd cars always feel a lot quicker as has been previously mentioned, don't know if that wears off if you own one though. Probably.

I've had the usual 'this is quick, doesn't look like a fast car from the outside either' which puts a smile on my face. But people soon get used to it.

I really like it when you're off out somewhere with someone driving another car who really loves their car and wouldn't dare think something else on the road is faster - take for example someone who had a 1.2 Corsa - he thought mine was a 1.2 as well, but after a quick blast down a slip road as he tried desperately to stay with me, and then proceeded to fly past me once I'd slowed down (me being sensible ;) think he was trying to regain his dignity) we arrived where we going and he asked me if I'd done anything to it, and I just pointed to the side bullet and said it's not a 1.2 buddy! Me being c**ky? Yeah, but why not! I'm not in cuckoo land, I know it's only a Renault!

Either people know about there cars and like my 172
Or people dont know what it is and you get the usual "is it lowered?" "what is it 1.4, 1.6?"

My brother has had a few people say to him after i've given him a lift to college before "oh, is your sister's clio a 1.4" Er...ner.

People are surpised, yet it's written on the door before they get in?

haha, bet she wasn't too happy with you for that! My ex used to scream sometimes if I went round a corner sharply and she'd grab hold of the Jesus handle.

lol she commented '' good job you can drive''

it was a week long thing any way and i enjoyed the meal lol

it was her fault we were late in the first place, when we got in the car to set off i even asked her are you a nervous passanger ect??

''no no all my mates drive fast''

obviously not fast enough
