172 Lost 5th Gear

Car  Clio 172
I was doing about 70 this morning in 5th and it lost all drive, no bangs or puffs of smoke but absolutely nothing in 5th.

Drives fine in 4th but there is a rattle coming from the engine, checked for any lost oil and nothing so did the few miles back home, there is not oil on the drive since i parked it, car starts and drives just revs in 5th though.

I did notice a slight whine in 5th when doing around 40mph but didn't think much of it.

Owned the car about 3 months and this is the first problem ive had, shame its such a big one.....

Any thoughts? Any similar issues? Is it a gearbox rebuild?

Thanks

Gearboxes are made of cheese, so I would guess yes, rebuild required.

Rebuild costs usually depend on what needs doing tbh. So you are best off ringing a local gearbox specialist.

You will of course need to factor in box removal and refitting.

Personally i'd say you're better off just buying another box,
mine went bang at 70 and jammed in 2 gears at the same time,
£170 from a breakers got me a replacement and nearly 3 years on it's still going strong,
I should also mention that you can buy a box off here for less than £170.

Depending on what yours needs, a rebuild could cost a lot more than just replacing it.

I agree with Dan 5th gear used to fall off do to a loose bolt.
due to it being in its own space that's why the rest of the box is unaffected

as above, 5th will of popped off, easy fix hopefully. personally for stuff like that I tend to do it back up 'man tight' so its not going to come off again no idea on specific torque settings however.

Just took the cover off this morning and found that 5th was shredded, it's also destroyed the gear on the main shaft so it's new gearbox time...

Not going to be able to do it in the driveway am I??

If you have tool's, a jack and stands then why not?
There's no reason why you can't remove and re fit it.

I do all of my work on the drive.
