172 - Manifold bolt advice needed.

  SLK 350
Where the exhaust manifold meets the exhaust there are two sprung bolts, my problem is one of these have snapped somehow, and its basically doing nothing apart from rattling like buggery and being a pain.

I've had it jacked up breifly and took a look at it, but it looks like a right pain in the arse to get access to both sides of the bolt, seems like you need a long deep spanner/socket down behind the engine, and another onto the other end under the car.

Question time:

1. Anybody else had one of these snap?
2. How much for a new bolt, and if there anywhere else I can source one?
3. Is there an easier way to replace the bolt than the above?

Cheers.

there a pain in the arse to chnage!!!

you can Not buy just one bolt from renault. you need to buy a seel pack which includes

wire gasket
2 bolts
2 nuts
2 springs

£12.52 + vat

hard to change unless ur on the ramps. and you will need a long extention bar on both sides..

do not change just one bolt and one spring.... chnage both.

soak the other side in wd40 24hours before

Very helpful mate, cheers :)

It's been gone for a while, but at 4k rpm it just sounds horrible, so i'll have to invest in a new one me thinks.

You wouldn't happen to have part numbers would you?

not to hand.. any renault dealer will find it with ur reg number ... on the manifold/zorst section of the sofware..
the bolts are 13mm btw

You can buy bolts off the shelf of any normal place and make them fit if you want there not that complex.

Aye i took a look at them and access is a right swine. I swear Renault make everything 10x more difficult to do than it needs to be!

So any 10mm bolts of the correct length would be sufficient for the job?

Oki doki, apart form it being phyiscally a 2 man job, anything i need to watch for Freddo? Seems easy enough apart from needing to rent a 5 year old boy who's arms are small enough to get amongst it.

The bolt shank is special and stops you from over-compressing the spring so you need the right ones.

Mine didn't snap but certainly did rattle @ 4k until I took it off and modded it with a washer to apply more compression. Starting to rattle again now though....
