172 Misfiring

  Ph2 172
More problems with my car :dapprove:

I had my coil pack go a while ago, when I had the new one fitted I was noticing that the car had a slight misfire at below 2000 revs, which got more noticable as the car got hotter. I put it down to another dodgy coil pack and replaced it on Wednesday hoping it'd be alright. But I'm still getting the misfire.

It's better than it was before, but the misfire is still there and I don't know what to do. I've pretty much run out of money repairing the car over the last couple of months so don't want to replace everything just in case.

I'm thinking that it could be plugs so was going to try those this weekend. Anyone else have any ideas?

when u change coil packs ur susposed to change them all at once or two at a time other wise they all start to fail one after another

So above 2000 revs the engine runs fine ?? On my old 172 it was hesitating below 2500 revs above that it was ok . Turned out to be the plugs .

Yeah my coil pack isn't like that, its just one unit which sits at the back of the engine and all the HT leads go into it

Runs perfect above 2000 yeah. So plugs sorted it for you then? Looks like the way to go, especially as they're cheaper than the HT leads! Recommend sticking to the standard plugs or are there better ones?

Just standard NGK PFR6E-10 plugs

Cool I'll get some plugs tomorrow then and see what happens. If not, I'll have to do the leads. Would be nice to be able to do something simple to fix a problem for a change, I swear I own the worst 172 in the country!

Whats it sound like when this happens?

Is it like the throttle sticks, and it burbles and spits for a bit?

its not like the throttle sticks no, it literally just sounds like its misfired, like its cut out for a split second. No spitting or anything

check your ht leads are not arching out on your plenum thats what caused a missfire on mine

Replaced my plugs today and had similar issues from standing or hill start. The leads looked like they had slight grooves in them so wondering whether to replace them?

they normally do but if they touch the plenum the ark out and cause a miss fire they should have a protective rubber sleave over all the leads

get it to someone with decent diagnostics... will prob cost you less than guess and replace as it should narrow it down to a specific problem..

may find they may even lend you a set of plugs to see if it cures it

Have not tried the leads yet but wondering what affect blocked / weak injectors may have? I do run the car low of petrol often  so wondering if my problems may be fuel related?

Injectors can block but as for running low whilst not good practice I woulnd't worry
