172 overheating and the garage cant figure out why.

Car  Clio sport 172
My 2003 172 overheated on a short drive last week and cooked off most of the coolant. The garage have had a look and they cant find the problem. They have changed the thermostat and the head gasket looks ok. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I saw a V6 up at 2 techs yesterday - was overheating,

every single blade on the pump had been sheared off. maybe that the reason!

I had a new water pump fitted when i had the belts changed a few months ago so hope its not that.

Yea the climate control was working fine. Im not sure about the sensor but it did cook off most of the coolant and was bubbling when i opened the reservoir. Looked like there was a airlock aswell because some coolant flowed back into the reservoir when i opened it.

Took it to a little renault specialist and it was the head gasket in the end. All done and running like a dream

In all my years on this forum, all the 172/182's I've had, I've only ever known one 172 blow a head gasket and that was after the guy drove it down the motorway with a cracked radiator.

Very uncommon.

The thermostat failed and the gasket went. Its had a reconditioned engine at some point before i bought it so they probably didn't do a very good job.

Did you have the belts changed during the headgasket change?? Or just put back together??

As said its like spotting a unicorn as the gaskets don't go on these
