172 ph1 mod/upgrades

  Clio 172 Ph1
Hey all I have recently purchased a 172 and have to say its a pride and joy, in fact the first car I have brought and insured. Where I brought it from had not treated it well so I am trying to make it into a wonderful machine again.
I have had a look under the bonnet most looks amazing but the induction kit looks like some weird creation using the original parts? (sorry I dont know much about cars). Anywhos I have decided to buy a BMC CDA Induction kit which I can install soon. I am also thinking about a remap.
Can anyone suggest anything else that I can do to make it more responsive and more brrrrroooomm brrrrooommm

Refresh all the steering components, your car is almost certainly massively sub standard handling wise at the moment like all these cars with a lot of miles on them, get it back to how it should have been from the factory first then modify it after.

I can't reiterate this enough. It makes a HUGE difference.

For most people's sake what components do you mean? I would assume track rods/ends and rack mounts or you mean the lot!? (Rack, column and track rods/ends ).

Anything that has play in it and can effect the steering mate so:
Rack
Rack mounts
Rods
Rod ends
Balljoints
Wishbone bushes
Top mounts
Shock bodies (play in the shock will also effect steering as it allows the body to move relative to steering arm location)

We have replaced all of those items on my mrs clio and its totally transformed it, it really does feel like driving one back when they were new.

If its got play in it then yes its required.
We replaced ours with a low miles one off a car I drove before it was scrapped that I knew was mint anyway, would be dear for a new gen renault one im sure, although you could always go reconditioned.

its a bit of a ballache to fit TBH! (I was lucky though, Danlp6 was round my gaff and started it off while I was doing some other work and then me and bigash finished it off so I didnt have to do it all start to finish which meant I only got 1/3rd of the skinned knuckles I otherwise would have, lol)

How much we talking for a complete overhaul on the components you suggested?

Depends on how many bits need replacing, some are just a dozen quid or so (rod ends), others are hundred of pounds (rack)

I think we spent about a grand in total including the new shocks and springs, probably the best money we have spent on that car.

pics of the induction kit??

how do you know the previous owners didnt treat it that well?

The BMC kit is quite expensive isn't it? It does the job fine I'm sure but the ktec seems to be the one to get on here.

Can anyone prove the £400 BMC has any gains over a ph1 airbox? Seems to me they're quite similar in design and cold air feed location ;)

£400!! Nope very much doubt it has much if any gains over a ph1 box which you can get for £50.

Any idea where I can get the necessary parts from originally I was thinking of up grading the suspension and brakes etc but unfortunately I am not very mechanically minded. I have had a look on Demon Tweeks for different parts etc but need some guidance. My issues are money and getting the garage to fit the parts will no doubt cost a bomb.

Beat place to buy the parts is Adam at renault wolverhampton which is the main trade parts hub for the midlands.

If moneys tight brakes and suspension do not need upgrading, perfectly adequate as they are. Mine are totally standard (as far as im aware) with just the addition of a whiteline rear anti roll bar, although i would like to lower it slightly eventually.

Cant comment on your part of the world, but they are great down in the southwest where I am, we have a largeish meet in exeter once a month, a smaller one in taunton, and things like rolling road days too (one this saturday in fact) and the occasional gokart meet etc.

Its quite a good car socially it would appear :)

I agree other than that a lot of the suspension and steering components are now worn so worth replacing at least if not upgrading.
