172 quick enough

  E39 530i
Hi all,

I've got a 172 had it for nearly a year, got the car off someone off here (Geoge16v)Anyone who knows the car will know it's quick very quick! I drive the car nearly everyday so I'm really use to it.

Whenever I take someone for a quick spin in it there always saying how fooking quick it is. Now, I cant really tell as I use it daily and i'm use to it. Does anyone else have this problem.

Or is it just my driving??!! :boring:

Yeah, but i do love my car and i treat it well, so i only boot it for my pleasure or to piss someone off whos sitting up my arse. You have a nice car, drive it nicely.
And you do get used to things, one to be careful of is getting used to the handling, ie: going around round-abouts at 50 with no trouble at all and then u jump in to an escort and think you can do the same thing.... No no!!!

Just drive it slowly for a week or 2, then have ya own fun on your "private runway"

  cock mobile.
I know what you mean, but take yesterday for example, I'm doing 50 behind a lorry in 6th to save petrol, cause I have none!!

This goes on for about 20 miles.

I fill her up, the boot the fucker down the dual carraige way, immediate smile and feeling I have a nice quick car.

Moral of the story, drive it slow for a while, then boot it.

I hardley ever boot mine....scared incase the gearbox fuks up but when i do it always puts a smile on ya face.

just sit in the passenger seat and let someone else drive! then you feel how quick it is when you havent got the steering wheel to hold onto!

i still trying to get used to mine after about 3 yrs , still sh1ts me up at times when floored at lower gears ,

Had my 182 for 6 months now , use it everyday , and i floor it everyday , most of the time tbh . I did the same with my 172 for 48k . No point having a car that will shift if your gonna drive like a granny imo .

I remember when I was taken for a test drive in mine before I brought it and I thought fook me this is quick.

Bit different when your in the driving seat though...never feels massively quick but I do love the steering & grip:D

Never feels quite as quick when you're driving, remember being 4 up once going up this long hill, dropped into 2nd and floored it. Acceleration wasn't anything amazing and I had my mates in the back shitting themselves.... just like I do when the missus drives.

Took it for a nice drive last night, blew the cobwebs away after a week of not driving, back lanes in 3rd.

Did'nt know the gear boxes were that sh*t on them?

I didn't either. I wouldn't of had one if i had known. apparently they are virtually the same box as the reno 19 16v, i had one of these a few moons ago. Got through two boxes(recons) in a year. :dapprove: Fooked it off cause i couldn't afford to keep it. Mint when it was going though.;)

Was doing a doughnut run (a trip to Krispy Kreme) last night with a mate and when I floored it to overtake other cars on the dual carriageway he said he doesn't expect a Clio to be this quick! I've had it for just over 3 months now and starting to get used to it but it still puts a huge smile on my face.

I find my car slow, annoyingly slow at times, although I have had it for almost 2 years and I got used to it a long time ago.

Still, my passengers gasp and crap themselves whenever I floor it. And when I moan about wanting a faster car I always get the reply; "What's wrong with your car? It's more than fast enough! Wish my car was this fast."

I personally don't understand where they are coming from, still feels dog slow to me :S

I suppose it depends how and where you drive it. On motorways, straight main roads, etc it feels slow and gutless, I suppose due to the lack of torque.

But in back roads and lanes on cam, it scares the crap out of me sometimes, that's when it's most fun.

I find its always a case of getting used to how quick it is!! You drive it for 6 months and then grow completely accustomed to the power from it.

My gf went from a 1.4 106 to a Clio 182 Cup and she now says how the car feels normal, not quick like when she first got it!!

I agree with whats been said . You do ge used to it , some days it doesn't feel anything special speed wise , then others it seems to fly especially on b roads . The best time to appreciate how quick they are is after its been in for a service and you've had a little 1.2 Clio or even worse a Renault Modus for the day . When you get your RS back and jump in its like a little pocket rocket and the smile factor returns :)

i sometimes think mine feels really slow, but i think i am just used to it.. i used to drive i 1.4RT back in the day, and had a shot of my dads civic 1.6 coupe while i had the RT.. i couldnt believe how rapid it felt..

the other day i picked his car up for him, and it felt so so slow.. was weird

they are a more uprated box than these, i had 1.8 16 and it did over a 100k on the same box, and the guy who had it b4 me thraped f00k out of it

On a dual carriageway you will eventually get used to anything and feel bored.

I went from a 1.2 16v to a 2.2 Vectra SRI 150 and that was a massive step up. It made my pulse race when I first got it but within a couple of weeks I was out ranting it around and could have sworn something was wrong with it and that it wasn't any quicker than my old 1.2!!

Same thing happened with the 182.

My zixxer gets to the ton in six and half secs but it only took 500 miles to go from wetting my pants to bored sick.

But this is on big wide open roads...

As said take the car down a lane and it still feels quick. When I take people out in it I never rant it on dual carriageway, I go to a short straight on a narrow piece of road, get it doing 30 in 2nd gear then floor it and they love it.

Or go out for a drive in a 1.2 and then you realise that your car is still mega quick. Take my advice though, don't go out buying faster cars trying to chase the thrill, you could get a Macca F1 but I guarantee you will be back to square one in a matter of weeks.

you should drive my 1.2 clio 16v n then drive yours, it will feel much quicker then lol your car got just short of 100 bhp then mine so it should feel a bit quicker lol

Yeah have the same problem, get used to the speed too quick. Made the unfortunate mistake of driving a friends VX220 Turbo last Saturday morning and now mine feels like a Metro. Must find a Metro to borrow for a week and I'll appreciate my 172 again.

If I come up on the lottery then I'll get myself a Mercedes MClaren SLR with Auto Box for the buzz.

Manufacturer’s performance ratings:
Zero to 60 mph 3.8 sec
Top speed (drag limited) 207 mph

So thats why my girlfriend shouts slow down, you just don't feel the speed in the drivers seat.

Same with all 172/182's, some days they seem rapid, other times a bit laid back. I scare myself sometimes, it loves to surprise you!

Tyson.

Yeah you do get used to it. I already think mine feels slow and I'm convinced it's not as quick as my old VTS (which I got used to quickly too).

People tell me it's quick.

My lass who's got a 1.0 12v Corsa, is insured to drive my 172 from the 16th of this month lol.
I think it's not only going feel quick but unstable!

and as for jumping into slower cars and forgetting they don't handle as well...

I scared myself big time when I nearly lost the back end on a busy round about when driving a courtesy car - 1.2 16v basic Clio.

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
I've had three cars and each has had less power than the previous - THAT'S DEPRESSING! :(

My lil 1.4 seemed mega slow for 1st 6 months, then suddenly seemed to have some life...maybe it needed time to get used to my style of driving instead of a london runabout...

Are the gearboxes that bad?? I'm worried now cos mine gets no mercy....

I get the same after having the 172 for a while I've gotten used to it - just feels normal. What you've got to do is pull away "normally" for you (but not really quickly) from some traffic lights and then notice that everyone else is still miles behind even when you weren't really trying ;)

Mine seems slow too...just the way it is..whatever you drive you get used to the speed/power.

You have a performance car that's designed to be thrashed every day, and will fall apart no matter what anyway. Give in death
