172 reg not found - DODGY?????

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Can't HPI a ph2 172 as the reg says nothing. The most any car history check is that its a Renault and its grey. Some are saying Renault saloon The guy showed me some car report for the car and said its all clear but I can't remember the company name so not sure if its a fake or not.

Even my insurance company doesn't recognise the reg.

MX53 OOV if anyone wanted to know. It had a cs sticker on the window too.

Could this mean its an import or something dodgy?

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Thanks mate, knew there was somewhere else I could check, but couldnt for the life of me remember where.

So would that be enough proof that the car is legit?

It's got MOTs and V5 with the car, and tax would need that with insurance anyway wouldn't it...

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
So would you personally walk away from it?

The car is very good condition with only some stone chips on the front, and drove excellently. Waiting to see a copy of invoice for cambelt change. Was sold up until now.

Really wanted it HPI'd for my peace of mind. Bit bazarre it not coming up on insurance. That good gut feeling has suddenely disappeared.

I think it means it not taxed. Ive tried to get a quote on a car and it couldnt find the car, phoned the garage up and they said it was because it was declared SORN.

Should come up anyway i think mate. was it found just not by the insurance company? I have an 02 plate for sale if interested, and yes its possible to get a cobra alarm fitted they just plug and play with the key fob

I think its an import one

Do you say that because that would explain why it isn't coming up? It had alarm and locking wheel nuts which I guess could be added but can the alarm be added into the renault key fob?

yeah the alarm can work with the standard 172 key. my old 172 had an aftermarket alarm beacause it was an import

But according to the tax disc link above, it has tax until 29th Feb 2009.

Which is the same as what the tax disc said.

tbh there are a lot about at the moment so i probably would walk away

+1

Think I will. Bit gutted as the bodywork was the best I've seen for a 5yr old car and it felt the best 172 I've test driven.

Oh right, didn't know that. Thought it was standard because I didn't need to point the fob at the interior like I do for the central locking on my ph1 clio. Unless all ph2 fobs are like this.

Yeah saw you car mate, but you're a bit far from me and I'm not really a fan of black cars. Can the key fob can be pointed anywhere for the cobra to work?

LOL!

I was thinking on my drive home after the viewing, I might end up with it before the meet, was getting a bit excited. I'm genuinely confused now. After seeing it my gut was saying go for it, now I'm thinking, is there a big reason why its not showing up anywhere???

I dunno what to do, but at least I'd know I'd never buy anything if I had a single doubt.

If I pop into the local police station, will they be able to confirm the car's identity for me? Like they do when they pull people over etc.

Could be a possibility that the car was on a private plate before? But V5 didn't look new at all. :S

  Monaco RS Clio 172
mine is dx, but is not an import. lock nuts, alarm, etched windows, etc?

surely can't be?

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
It could have been regisated with a private plate on yes. it says its grey on that DVLA site

Tis a thought, but unless it was changed very recently, it should come up on HPI, insurance, etc shouldn't it?

But thinking back, don't think the V5 wasn't in new-ish condition.

the website for the authorities allows mot history check, tax check, etc. tried askmid.com? just to see if it comes up as anything? altho not the most accurate site, that is the insurance db at least.

bare in mind my mothers escort lx 1.6 comes up as an escort estate. but it does come up as a ford escort at least lol

update** MX53OOV is NOT on the Motor Insurance Database today

but doesn't mean alot I suppose. sorry matey pretty useless suggestion tbqfh from me.

just confirms it isn't insured.

mine comes up like so: assuming you want this back from somewhere:

DX52T** is on the Motor Insurance Database today

The details on the MID are:

Vehicle Make/Model:RENAULT CLIO RENAULTSPORT 172 16V

only other thing I can suggest is maybe text hpi.. then try hpi.co.uk which I where mine come back clear..

Benmore, the car doesn't come up but its trade, was part exchanged today I was told. So previous owner would have switched his insurance to his new car, and trader prob hasn't added it to his policy yet.

When I put my current car in, its says its on the database but no info about model etc.

Lemonnobby1, the car has had a total of 3 previous owners so far, the last guy bought it in 2005.

to be fair, if the vin plates match, you take a mechanic or good friend who knows a thing or two about cars to ensure it's not damaged underneath or a cut and shut, they have the loggy etc, everything is great.. maybe it's ok...

maybe the police can confirm it's not stolen

or get an aa inspection...? they check right?

Vehicle Type Approval M1 - says this for mine too .. so all good i assume? :rasp:

  Renault
My car was originally registered XBZ or something (from N.I). When I phone my insurance up I need to tell them exactly what it is. My V5 simply says Renault Hatch back and engine size. The dealer we got it from did not register it on it's new GB plate properly.

I believe M1 means Multi-stage EC type-approval according to

http://www.ake.fi/AKE_EN/Type_Approval/

My parents cars come up null and my neighbours cars come up M1, only thing I can detect is that my parents cars were pre-march 2001, whereas my neighbours' were just after.

Looking into the aa inspection now. Think I'll try the local station for info as well, no idea what they'll know tho tbh. Vin sticker matched vin number on V5 and service book.

Ahh right, so a c**k up in the re-registering could be the prob. Cheers mate, will try and find out if it's been re-registered at all.

you tax is like 14quid more than mine for 6months hahaha

Tis the difference atm between if registered pre-march 2001 and post-march 2001 due to emissions rather than engine size.

Im going with the private plate at first reg or an import. dont forget the V5 wouldnt like new anyway if it had 3 owners but it was only a private plate for the first owner
