172 speakers

  Mazda 2, MX5 Mk2.5 Sport

I am thinking about upgrading the speakers in my 172 (but not the tweeters as i cant be arsed to remove the top of the dash). Just wondering if there are any direct replacements that will plug straight into the exsisting connector blocks? or can I buy the same type of connector to wire up to the new speakers?

I quite like infinitys as Ive had some before and really liked the sound and I was impressed with the amount of bass for the size of the speaker.

Ive already tried some sonys in the back out of my old car but they sounded worse than the standard ones.

PS. Ive got the standard HU and Im not really planning on changing it

  A blue one.

..the infinitys I used to have installed had a separate crossover box, so you had no choice in removing the top of the dash to install them - and you need to cut the wire to accomodate the crossover.

Pheonix do some speakers with crossovers built into the speaker (like the renault) those would be more suitable as far as wiring configuration is concerend, but ive no idea about fit....

I never liked the infinities, they had way to much top end, kind of gets annoying if you listen to rock/metal etc.

if you dont fancy doing it your self get them fitted by a professional.

that way you can enjoy great sound.

(ps you dont have to buy the speakers from the local ice dealer)

problem number one.

the std hu is ok as are the speakers they are very well matched so sadly you need to do both or not bother.

I changed the speakers in mine (JBL 526es) and they were better than the standard sh!te, but the head unit was not making the most of them.

Ended upo ditching the standard CD player too and fitting a good Kenwood Mask HU & CD changer, which now sounds a LOT better than the factory fit head unit.

As the others have said... change the lot!

p.s. the JBL 526es I have are not expensive and sound very good!

Definately change the lot.

I replaced the HU with a Pioneer unit and am well happy with its performance. Now Im just trying to find some speakers which would be matched to the 50W mosfet amp...problem is all the speakers Ive looked at are 30W or are rated much higher than the amp...grrr

Well, when I got mine I got sick of the sound of the OE speakers, so fitted Infinity 552is all round, and blimey what a difference it made, really good, a load more low down response and the clarity was superb...... so Id say try that..... or even stick the 552is in the back and get the component set for the front but just install the bass/mid and crossover in the door (Or get a passive crossover to go in the door - whatever) itll sound great.

yup, I used some little connecting wires to go from the renault plugs to standard leads, but apart from that, straight swop no problems at all.

Roamer - are you still using the standard HU?? cause I think I might try the 552s as I really liked the Infinitys I had in my other car
