172 Sport Cup - very confused by spec

Hi guys, im looking at buying a RenaultSport Clio 172 Cup but very confused about the spec on one i am looking at.

Basicallly its got Air Con/Climate control and the owner is adament its got ABS. Now from what ive read i thought these were the key admissions from the Sport to decrease the weight.

Ive done a basic HPI check on the car and its checks out as being a cup, yet i dont understand how it can have AC. The current owner (a female family friend) knows very little about the car so got no choice but to turn to the experts, you!

Really appreciate your help guys.

Dave

Hmm It could have aircon but ABS is a no no I'd of thought.

Aircon was an option towards the end of the production run.

Climate was an option on later cars, it should not have ABS though.

I'd agree with that.

The last of the line 172 Cups did have air con as an option. But ABS never was.

First off what colour is it? 172 Cup only came in Mondial Blue (metalic blue) and silver. Most were blue.

What alloys does it have? 5 spokes points to it being a non Cup 172 that will have ABS standard. Cups came with Speedline Turini multi spoke alloys.

Does it have headlight washer jets? Cups don't.

Failing all that take it for a spin and stamp on the brakes. If it locks up its a Cup! :)

I thinks its a 2003 model (currently on a private plate) so that could explain the A/C. Thanks guys. And about the ABS it must be the owner getting confused.

So if Renault allowed you to spec it with A/C near the end of production how much light was it over the Sport then? Where else did they gain weight loss from then?

@ John D - yep its Mondial Blue and im sure it has multi spoke alloys. I dont believe it does have washer jets. Hmmmm, interesting!

Dunno how much lighter it will be with air con - not as much obviously.

Weight was saved with thinner glass, no spare wheel, and no rear head rests! (dammit, knew I'd miss something...)

  Spec C 12.5@110 (345/355)
No spare wheel, light weight alloys, less sound deadening, no air-con, thinner glass.

Removed the spare wheel, had cloth seats, non-xenon headlights, no engine cover, no rear headrests, tbh most of them were money saving exercises but every little helps.

according to the guide edde wrote it has a valve that will stop the rears locking too nastily but never abs

Lads, that is awesome. Thanks alot for you help and the info. To be honest not sure if i want a cup with A/C, seems to defy the object but the price could be right soo.

Would be interesting to find out how much A/C adds in terms of weight!

At a rough, educated guess, I'd say 15-20KG, for the unit and all the associated piping.

There is not a lot in it between any 172/182 variant in straight line speed to be fair. But personally I do agree with your sentiment that it does defy the object of the Cup somewhat.

IIRC the Air Con was circa 12Kg...next to nothing in real world tems of performance though...just another item to remove if you wanted to strip the car out! ;)

Hardcore you know the score!!

No air-con for me!

:)

O/T but I've heard the Spec C is one of the more raw Scoobs even aside from no air con. Less sound deadening does it not? How do you find it?

Mine does have air-con ironically, I was just saying if I could choose it wouldn't bother me not having air-con, but then I do live up here!

Less sound deadening, try none!;) I don't drive it every day so it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

all this about it locking up is nonsense too, you really have to STAMP on that pedal to get them to lock up.

i had a cup for 18 months and locked it up about twice i think, and it used to get driven hard, u just to be reading the road ahead. dont be frightened of it locking up everytime u pull up at the lights mate, lol.

Stil got mine lewis, I seem to lock the wheels rather alot! The roads round here are very uneven and also extremly slippy at the mo! Not so bad in the summer. But still when your givving it the beans the brakes have never filled me with confidence!

As for the A/C I looked hard to find a cup wit it, now i have had it a year I really couldnt care less about having it, but like said before it is great for clearing the windows!

Would'nt say that was true. Mine will lock the left front quite readily in the wet, especially if I hit a surface change or bump. And will give a little chirrup in the dry occasionally. Keeps things interesting though!

What with todays roads ABS is nice, not a necessity as good observation helps you 9/10 but tbh I rather have it than not have it for that one time something unexpected happens

On both my 172FF and 182FF I found it extremely hard to lock the wheels and get the abs to cut in, even trying. So I imagine it's not essential.

I would never go without aircon again. All it takes is a traffic a jam on the one warm summer day we get, and that's enough!

I do think Cups look stunning - love Mondial blue and the turinis.

Saw one which was obviously just washed under petrol station lights the other day and I couldn't stop staring at it!
