172 Track Day Brakes - Discs and Pads Recommendations

  RenaultSport Clio 172
Hiya guys and gals

I'm sure this is a question that has popped up over the years but it is one I have yet to find an answer to.

I want to take my 172 03reg on track days. I want to upgrade the brakes, probably just the front as I've heard it's not worth doing the rears for the odd use it will get blasting around Thruxton.

I want to avoid the 'own brand' aftermarket discs (i.e. the cheap ones) but don't want to spend too much, I guess we are talking max. £200ish for discs and pads. I guess it's about maximising quality within the budget.

Ideally I also want brakes that work well on road too, in other words they work well from the off before they have to warm up.

Any ideas what I should go for?

Cheers

J :)

I went for Brembo max disks and EBC greenstuff pads, they worked fine till i took them to the ring now they vibrate/grind like mad if they get warm.

for about £200 you could get brembo max discs and ds 2500 pads and there are a lot of peeps on here who will reccomend that set up as well

Neal 182/Big Bob - thanks for these guys, seems like a good package for the price.

Just thought of another issue - do the pads fit with the original 172 calipers?

performance friction 97 pads are the best you can get in the standard calipers if you do go for them then get brembo high carbon disks dont get maxi disks as they will cost a bomb and will not last long with the pf97 pads eat disks but if you want a decent road pad and good track pad then go for ferodo ds2500 they are quite good

I've gone through 2 MOTs with Pagid Blues on with no problems. They may not technically be road legal, but do they remove and scrutinise pads during the MOT?

DO NOT forget to upgrade your brake lines...I'd do this before and over and above everything else.

No matter how much money you spend on discs and pads it will be wasted if you have a mushy imprecise and inconsistent brake pedal.

just act daft and tell them there standard aren't they

or well its been like that since i bought the car.

Good good. The PF 97 pads or the Ferodo DS2500 - MOT pass or fail?
They'll all pas the MTO since there still fine there not road legal but the'y cannot remove the wheel during the MOT so they cannot remove the pads and check the labels on them anway.
