172,uk spec, car supermarkets,probs

  182

Ive finally got myself sorted to buy a 172, i know they dont sell them at renault anymore but have been looking at some super markets.

There are a few sights that sound really good like MotorProvider.co.uk. Drivethedeal.com and a few others but upon speaking to a renault dealer i now have serious doubts!!!!

I did enquire within my local renault garage to see if they could get any more 172s but they couldnt so i told him about the deals in the supermarkets and he was saying that normally thats where all the problem cars end up, something to do with when they are made and sent to renault or checked over by renault if there not up to standard they get blocked and sent to places like auctions and supermarkets or other places like that! He also said if i was to buy an import 172 rather than a uk 172 that would probably be better but the warranty, resale value etc isnt the same as a uk car.

He sayed normally when these cars are blocked it means that the problem(s)cant be sorted out that even though you get the warranty the chances are the problem would be hard if not impossible to fix, and you wouldnt be able to take it back to where you got it from because thats not how they work.

Im pretty un happy to be honest coz the 172 was the dream car for me and i cant really afford the £14k+ price tag for the 182 so it looks like the dream for me is over!

Is there anychance that he could be wrong i mean im sure loads of people have bought imports or uk spec 172s from these places with the full warranty etc Is my dream really over??:(

Mate, loads of people have bought imports, without problems. Two guys I work with have 172s bought from my local car supermarket and niether have had any problems. I bought a UK car through a broker as it worked out cheaper for me (got a far better deal with part exchange), but my local supermarket ( http://www.ianshiptoncars.co.ukwww.ianshiptoncars.co.uk ) is now selling the latest spec (cruise control etc) 172s for £11,799. Add a couple of hundred to that for a cat1 alarm, a few hundred more for 12 months tax and New car registration and your still only looking at about £12,300 OTR. Cheap as chips!!

In all honesty it sounds to me as though the dealer was filling you full of BS to try and get a sale.!!

If you do go for an import, make sure its from a country in the EU i.e. not from Cyprus as I believe these have a limited warranty. All other EU imports have 3yrs warranty (1yr manufacturer, 2yr dealer).

Just had a look on the website and hes got four 172s, one of each colour!!

My local Renault dealer is selling an ex-demo cup for £11,999!!

Renault actually do sell or have a few 172s left I was looking at one not3hours ago.£14500. Bought mine 18mths ago through Macro motoring for just over 11k with no problems whatsoever.

Sad day today though .I have just traded it in for a 1.5dci. Ill get me pipe and slippers. Got 9k for a trade in , I feel violated.02 clio with 8500miles:(

My god those dealer dont half spraff a load of crap.. my 172 is an import and I have had no more problems than people on here with a UK 172.

Just come from the dealers he looked it up on the computer and there are no 172s or cups left to be bought from the dealers.

Its not really an import im after its the uk cars from the S Ms that motorprovider.co.uk seem the most appealing to me but the Renault dealer seems to reckon its the uk cars which are more likely to be problem rather than the imports.

Its now a really hard decision for me coz im gonna get a big loan over a long period for the 172 coz my valver is sh*te but have all these extra wories has anyone got a number to phone for Ren uk need to ask them some Qs about warranties etc cheers .

Rob.

Thats bull. The brokers are getting the same cars as the dealers. They buy loads at once so they get a discount thats all. They have they same warranty and you often pick them up from the dealers anyway. If you want one and the brokers guarantee they can get you one then do it.

ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant believe the depths some dealers will go to!!!

Get your self an EU import brand new from a car supermarket, call Renault UK upgrade the warranty to 3 years (its free!!) And enjoy your car, youll have no more (and hopefully less) problems than anyone else..mines 18months old and just run in, all common probs sorted (under warranty) and the car just gets better....plus I save myself £ss on what the dealer was asking for an older car with 30k on the clock..:)

total poppycock (top word that innit?)

I went to a renno dealer that is on the same road as a car supermarket. He gave us all the same BS. Wanted us to pay 2 grand more for the SAME car. We bought from the car supermarket and the renno dealer we go to (not the one mentioned above) doesnt even make any reference to it been an import. Lets face it it would be laugable if they did because my cars FRENCH!

The only difference between a UK 172 and an import 172 is the UK 172 comes with an alarm, the import just has the immoboliser.. but thats a good thing cause it means you can fit an aftermarket alarm.

Standard alarms usually suck anyway, and a lot of people have had trouble with the standard unit.

You lose out on an import when you come to sell them. If youve paid less for it new a prospective buyer will expect to pay less for it secondhand, I know would expect to pay less if buying a second hand import.

I bought my 172 from motorpoint in derby in 2001 (Dutch import) and have had no problems with the car whatsoever. Had the center section of the exhaust replaced under warrenty at a Renault dealer and also serviced by Renault. Also wrote to Renault UK for them to confirm in writing that I have 3 year warrently like the UK cars. So all in all, buying a car from a Renault garage had no advantages for me whatsoever and saved £2500 on the purchase price. The resale value? Well Ive just sold my car at the current uk market value for the age and mileage for the car.

The dealer is talking out of his "chocolate starfish".

So how do you loose out if you paid less for it to start with? The depreciation is the same...and if you intend to keep it for a while anyway you loose less the older the car gets, as they all tend even out price wise after 3 years anyway. :)

I would say if anything depreciation on a dealer bought car is greater. If you buy from a dealer at a grand more or whatever its gonne be worth £11,500 after a year regardless of what you paid for it. My local dealer said £14000 was the best price he could do. Walked 100 yards up the road and paid £12500

A 3 year old import will always be worth less than a 3 yr old UK car. Goes without saying
