172 wheels on a non sport.

I have just refurbished 172 alloys and put them on my 1.2.

Lowered on Eibach pro kit.

I took the rear arch liners out as they where touching the tyres.

Front there is about 4mm clearance from the shock strut.. When driving i was getting a very light resistant sound its hard to describe but nothings rubbing i don't think.. I took the front wheels off and clipped the little plastic spikes off left over from the tyre moulding and it has got better.

Its almost non existent but its there.. Then again i don't know what it was like before because ive never had music off and both windows down to listen.

The front left tyre, Is mounted on the wrong way round.. OUTSIDE is in the inside of the tyre.. Could this be the problem?

I will go and get it flipped round if so...

Also i bought the wheels and tyres on and although they are weighted its very possibly there unbalanced.. I have no wobble or jumpiness when driving though.

Im thinking having the tyre turned round, The 5mm spacers on which i dont think i need, Will have the balancing checked and tracking done from the lowering.

I've put chalk on the strut for now and tomorrow ill see if there's any signs of rubbing.

Any help with the spacers? Any non sports running 172 alloys without spacers all fine?

Been for a drive again, Its slightly noticable, Im sure nothing is rubbing but there is still a slight resistance noise..

I think it could be the very edge of the tyre so to speak brushing. I will look for marks in the chalk tomorrow.

Would a tyre mounted on the wrong was cause any problems?

Is too dark to get any pics at the moment, But i will do tomorrow mate...

It sits very nicely. The 16"s fill the arch gap with the pro kit springs pretty nice.

Only thing i need to get sorted is this slight noise..

I think im going to get the tyre switched round tomorrow and have the tracking done.

I took the rear arch liners out, They where touching the rear tyres so i thought no chance of it not rubbing...

Fronts i can get my finger between the tyre and the shock...

I dont think anything is rubbing, Im wondering if the noise is the tyre on the wrong way round? (OUTSIDE showing on the inside etc)

I lowered my car 4 weeks ago, Let the springs settle and had no noises on my standard 15"s... Bigger alloys causing more tracking difference ?

It sounds like road noise, But it sounds like resistance.. Im wondering if its a combination tracking and very possibly the one wheel being the wrong way round... Im really unsure though.

Im going to whip the wheel off tomorrow and look for any marks.. If not then tracking i guess.

I think i need to get the tracking done anyway but im not sure weather that is causing the noise... Im just wondering weather im listening out to hard... But as i keep saying it is quite noticable...

Surely a tyre mounted on the wrong way wouldnt cause any noise no?

Yea 5mm is okay on standard bolts I think.

Although the ones you linked are generic, and the centre bore will be different, and as such they are an absolute pain to keep them in the right place and line them, and the wheel holes up, when you put the wheels on.

re. outside showing on the wrong side, can't you just swap the two front alloys over?

I see what you mean mate yeah, Hubcentric rest on the hub so its easy to line up right?

Im now thinking the noise is from the shock covers on the back ! the fronts was a small line in the chalk, almost no touching at all as i can get my finger in there..

However the back shock covers had some markings on, Im not sure if its recent but im guessing and i havent checked but i think it could be that now it is a plastic on plastic slight sound.. Hard to explain.

I cant get these covers off without taking the shocks out right?.. Unless i cut them off And having them off wouldnt be the best idea?

If i get a set of hubcentric 5mm spacers, I can try the fronts or the backs i suppose and see what cures it.

I'm no expert but I've looked at these ones before. You can't get hubcentrics smaller than 13mm I think.

With the ones linked the centre bore is the same as a clio, so these will sit on the hub, so will be alrite to line up.

I had a similar problem with my 182 wheels on the back, not on coilovers though. The tyre rubbed on the passenger side, on the inside of the tyre, not on the shock but next to the shock, more towards the back of the wheel well.

Yeah, I was looking at these too, What about the bolts though, Will they be long enough? Losing 5mm thread surely will be alright im guessing.

I think 5mm is okay. I was told anything over 5mm is when you start needing longer bolts.
I had 5mm on with standard nuts, no noticable problems.
Some people might say otherwise though.

Yeah i think your right, Should be fine, Im pretty sure its the rears now, Although the fronts do need spacing.. I think i might try the 5mm's on the rear to see if it stops the noise..

If it proves me right, I might get a set of 15cm hubcentric spacers (propper kit) for the rears and then use the 5mms on the front.

Anyone just confirm for me 5mm will be ok with standard bolts please?

Yea I've used 5mm on front and back with standard bolts.
No problems, other than them being generic and as such an absolute pain to line up when taking wheels off/on.

Anything above 5mm I think your wise to go Hubcentric.
