There is a thread about what to look for in a new car. Id do a search before people start moaning.

Get pics up when you buy. oh and when you test drive get to at least 5000 rpm. Its where the fun begins!!!

How old is it and how much?

If its a mk2, ask them if its had the knocking under load on the front suspension. Easy fix and most have it done. It knocks when you boot it in 1st

Also, later 172s have cruise control as standard.

Check how bald the tyres are, if it has full RSH, chips on the bonnet, marks on the alloys, when it was last serviced, how many mms are left on the pads, does it have any dealer warranty, is it an import as this mean its worth less, dings from other careless car owners opening door on it and will they give you CS discount.

Welcome to the club mate, what colour is it?

Make sure it’s warmed up a bit before you rag the balls of it, 10-15 minutes of normal driving should do it.

Black Mk1s are pretty rare. I cant think of many on this site and only Day springs to mind.

£5000 is a good price, maybe a little too good. After a sniff round the web

Cost New (01)
£ 15495

Franchised Dealer
£ 9045

Independent Dealer
£ 8475

Private Good
£ 7210

Private Poor
£ 5375

Part Exchange
£ 6260

Id expect a damn good reason for the cheap price and get it RACd or take a competant mechanic before signing up.....Obviously, these figures dont take into accout the inablilty to shift 172/182s at the moment, but £5k seems dodgy......
