172s still to get cheaper???

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Having an arguement/discussion with my Dad, he reckons I could save a few hundred on a ph2 172 (around £3.5k-4k currently) buying it in Nov/Dec instead of now.

What do you guys reckon?

No. I think they'll go back up.

Theyre £4k for a decent one now. By Christmas that price will be £6k.

By next summer I expect them to hit £10k, then the sky is the limit really.

Its not like its an old model or anything.

the prices seem to be rising again especially on the ph1 172...i dont think between now a dec will save you hardly any money

I wouldnt expect them to increase to 10 grand ever!, cars tend to sell better during the spring time (especially convertibles). The prices generate around the glasses guide, and will only really vary depending on age, mileage and general health and cosmetics of the car.

If you bought a decent car for a decent price, enjoy it... or you could of waited longer and bought a car hiding a problem for cheaper.

I thought that level of sarcasm was saved for the 172FF threads ;)

I'm not expecting them to go back up, I was wondering if prices are at the lowest they will be now and will they maintain at this low until next year or get cheaper still?

Surely there will be a point where people will decide its not worth selling any less than a certain value and just stick with their 172s until sold at the price they want for it. I am wondering if this is that point or its worth holding out for as I've seen quite a few cars on sale at the same/similar price for a while now.

Paid £2400 for my wifes ph1 172 with FRSH and 60k on the clock a few months back.

Your dads correct. Winters on the way, Christmas and the "credit crunch" will see second hand car values fall even more over the next few months.

172 (and 99% of cars) values are only going in one direction and that's not up.

That's what I was thinking.

Ph1 prices rising? That due to the tax increase on the ph2s you reckon?

You can say that about any car. Say you bought a brand new Clio in 1992. One of the first Mk1's. Nice and shiny. No idea what they were sold for, for arguments sake im saying £8k.

A year later and done 12k, whats it worth? £6k? Worth Selling? Of course.

6 years on from that, ph3 is out. Done another 50k. Worth say £3k? Worth selling? Depends which was you look at it, but its still worth something.

Whats it worth now? £500 if that.

Cars like these wont ever go up and they wont ever stop going down.

I hate it when my Dad's right :( lol

I've been holding out for a good condition car with full history at a good price, finding all three of those points has been near impossible so far (which I expected so not moaning), so maybe holding out a couple of months longer will bring me something.

without read the thread...... imo the prices can only go down. at the end of the day its not a rare car and the price of running it is just going up. and al people are concerned about at the moment is saving money on their bills. Im definetly going to keep an eye on prices though the winter and into summer, if i can save a couple hundred then ill be more than happy! pays for the tax init!

Sorry, I meant those who think its worth selling to save on tax, insurance, petrol, etc. There will be a point where they will think if they sell at a lower price, it'll actually be more expensive overall (inc cost of new car) to not bother replacing. Obviously, a normal car will decrease in value over the years, but in a couple of months, would they be expected to drop a lot?

If the economy was in a better state, its unlikely that there would be a big change in price in a couple of months, but as Griff said with the "credit crunch" and hard times for some, is it likely to go down a lot (eg. around £4-500) or just a bit (£100 or so) on a £4k car??

  Mk2 Clio dci
surely they'll get cheaper credit crunch or not. Their gonna get older and do more miles, so obvs they'll be worth less??

They might go down a bit by December but not much imo. You have to decide if its worth paying that little extra to have it now and start enjoying it or wait a few months to save a few hundred at most.
You could end up waiting for ever with that way of thought because if you wait from December until say march you never know you might save a bit more and on it goes....

I wont be waiting past Christmas to save more, just wondering if I'll be able to get more for my money within the next couple of months, ie. newer car with less miles.

For example, for the average price of a 02 plate with 60k miles today, will I be able to get an average 03 plate with 50k miles for the same price in Nov/Dec.

A newer, lower mileage car for the same price is IMO worth waiting a month or two for, but if prices are unlikely to change that much, and maybe I'd just end up saving £100 on the 02 plate by waiting, then its not worth the wait personally to me.

That's why I wanted to know if people thought 172 prices are likely to decrease more than normal depreciation in the coming months.

Apologies if my previous posts weren't so clear.

They'll keep depreciating, but then you could argue that you're better off waiting for another 5 years. There's a point when the comparitive deal is very good and right now there are some amazing deals around.

If you have the cash to buy now, I'd say go for it. Yes, the same car may be worth a bit less by Christmas, but it'll be worth less again in the New Year and even cheaper again next Christmas (etc, etc...).

Prices will always go down until they reach a certain level. I came on here with £5k to buy a mint 172 but ended up putting in another £1k and got a mint 05 182.

Yeah, I could've waited till xmas and got it cheaper, I could of waited till next summer and got it cheaper again. You've got to draw a line somewhere.

Oh, and I really can't see rising tax making that much of a difference. Its only another £50 or so - stay off the beer for 1 weekend. I really wish we could pay tax monthly via direct debit or something.

Pretty much all cars are dropping in value, All cars i was looking at for about £8k 3-4 months ago when i bought the 182 are all below £7k now.

As I explained before I was only referring to a significant saving within the next 2 months, so that I would be able to afford a car of less age and mileage for the same price as today. Obvs a car will get cheaper, in 6 months, 12 months etc, but it will also be older with higher miles.

I'm only asking if I'll be saving hundreds in the run up to Christmas, due to bad economic climate etc, people being skinter than normal atm, rising bills etc.

Also, I wasn't moaning about the tax increase, just it might be a contributing reason for people to sell their 172s and buy something more economical, cheaper to insure etc, and if money is urgently needed around christmas due to high bills, redundencies etc, there might be a large selection of cars going cheaper than they normally would have.

That's a lot more than general depreciation tho isn't it.

Guessing its due to economical hard times for some, but you nailed my point, they have fallen a lot recently, I am wondering if they are likely to continue falling a lot in the run up to Christmas.

set ur budget now and see if anything falls within it. I set mine at 5k for a 172 and found a mint one for 4.3k with 26k. This was a one off but if your willing to travel then you may get a peach. I saw another min 172 in leics i will see if i still have the number around

also i cant see decent 172 ph2 (with decent mileage) selling less than 4-5k as that would mean ph1 would be dirt cheap

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Leics is miles away from me, but thanks all the same mate.

I've roughly got a £4k budget, can spend more if its worth it but I'd prefer not to. Will see how prices are over the next few weeks and see what becomes available. Have seen some cars on the market for the last few months, but sure the mint ones will go quick.

4k will get one with 60-70k miles on. What i like about 172's is that people who dont know alot about cars own them. I bought mine off a grandad and the leics one from a girl who hardly used it!!! I would save up anyway and stretch the budget to 4.5k, if not higher, for a mint one tbh irrespective of timescale. By Christmas i cant see low mileage ones dropping so much(3/12 away!!). Only a 2.0 litre engine so the prices wont tumble.
Brand86 has a mint black one but i cant rmember his price.

A lot of ph1s £2-3k, some ph2s starting at £3k, most from around £3.5k upwards.

This ph2 is not so far away from me, I'm considering a viewing but cambelt details sound dodgy, and the dealer seems very adimant to no offers, told me not to come down if I'm only considering to offer him less, as he's reduced it recently.

Yeah thinking within the next month or 2, £4.5k budget will be easier to live with once I've saved up a bit more, but depends what and where they come up.
