182 Air filter / Induction Kit advice

  Black Gold 182FF
I recently fitted a universal air filter to my 182, and it sounded and went really well. But after doing 600 miles my "serv","oil",and "stop" lights came on last night on my way home from work, causing me to slow down to less than 40mph on the motorway. On inspection the engine oil was below the lower mark on the dipstick. The left side exhaust was boiling hot and was dribbeling a black ink like liquid. The right side exhaust was cold and looked dry. My car had it's 12k service last month and I have only covered 2500k since. However the engine oil is now empty. Is this a filter problem?:(

I put the origional air box back on today, filled the engine oil just above the limit and took it for a 300 mile drive and it seems ok. There does not seem to be any leaks around the engine, and both exhausts look ok, a bit black though (Almost like it's burning rich). Has anyone else had the same problem when upgrading their air filters / induction kits. Also, which induction kits would you recommend for better sound and performance on a standard 182. I will not be re-fitting this universal induction kit as I think this is what caused the initial problem.

Im not technical enought to know 100%, but cant see how you induction kit would make it burn all the oil. I would be careful and get it into renault ASAP (ommitting the fact it had a universal kit on it at one time)

sounds like another good renault service;)
yeah cant see how an i/kit would have this affect:S

Definitely sounds a strange one this ! Could be just a coincidence about the low oil level problem and you fitting an air filter .I've heard of some 172/182's burning oil before but without wanting to alarm you sounds like it could be something serious to have lost so much oil on such a new car . Agree with admits , get it into Renault and tell em nothin' about the air filter .

  172 cup'd extreme
sounds like they didnt put enough oil in when it was serviced that is a common thing along with them not tightening up your wheel bolts after

apernelty renault accept that the car use 1ltr of oil per 1000 miles as this is within tollerance?

^^^^ Yeah i know . When i had my 172 i never once had to top up the oil and i did 48k from new . Could be just something as simple as 16v jon says , they might not have put enough oil in when it was serviced .

  Shhh
I would of replaced the original airbox back onto the car, not touched anything else..then rang Renault AA assistance..asap..

By topping the oil up, you have removed any evidence.

Thanks for the replies, popping into renault tomorrow morning, as trying to book the car in over the phone is a nightmare. (Keep repeating the problem and then get transferred to someone else to do the same again)....

^^^^ What do you think it is , a murder scene , removing the evidence , lol .

Maybe he needed to drive his car , leaving it with no oil in would probably have caused more long term damage . I would have filled it up as well .

well if youve put an air filter on it, no doubt youve been revvin the f**k out of it to hear the sound :)

bearing that in mind and the oil in the exhaust, it sounds like it could be a damaged head gasket. im not a mechanic tho

oh btw, the engine would run lean rather than rich on an aftermarket air filter (which would be lettin more air into the engine)

Since max to minimum on the car is 1 liter or so and you've done 2.5k and the tolerance by Renault is a liter ever 1000 miles I'd think it might just be one of those engine which burns oil. However as jon said most likly they didn't fill it with enough oil check your sump plus I bet they didn't either do it up or didn't replace the washer.

PS if you live on the Wirral don't use that dealership go to Chesher much better there. Only thing the Wirral place is good for is cheap services but I wouldn't trust them to rememeber I've had a lot of dealing with them.

The sound was not that great, sounded a little above standard. I'm not one to rev the f...k out of my cars, but I must admit that I have driven her hard from day 1. :rasp:

Like i said, would of done nothing then rang Renault Uk AA assistance who would of come out and made a report on it, and had a look at the car there and then and made a choice if to top it up.

Meanwhile if i went bang next day, your covered...

Not as daft as you look, you know... ;)

Cheers, thanks for the advice. Yip, they are a bit unfriendly at the Wirral dealership.
