182 Buurrrrrr Noise from Wheel

Have a weird problem. Now and again a weird buuurrrrrr noise from the driver side front wheel.

Only thing I can compare it to is when your brakes are on your bicycle and the wheel is still going round if that makes any sense....

No play in the wheel. Pads are fine. Fluid is fine.

Any ideas?

rubbing is lowered? or a wheel bearing.

Not lowered. No sign of any rubbing. Appears at random times...straightlines/bends....whenever

Is it easy to check them? Can you tell if they are worn....like

Jack it up, spin the wheel, if it makes the noise you describe then bearing.
But ill add, when they are just on their way out, they don’t always make a noise, just at intervals and then more and more common as time goes on.. That’s my experience anyhow and I’ve done a few...

IS there any other way? I mean if i bother to go to Renault...and it doesnt make the noise on the spin....then they wont replace it? Or is there another way to tell!

Grab the wheel at diagnals and check for play.

Also try grabbing the top and bottom while you've got the wheel jacked up to check for play in your bottom ball joint.

SOunds like wheel bearing , but make sure you get the garage to check both sides . As the sound can transfer through axel , like you could put your life on it that the sound is from the drivers side, but turns out to be the other wheel

my cup has 25k on the clock and needed the rear passenger side wheel bearing replacing. it was a kind of whiney noise when doing about 60 is was defening after a while.

if u turn left and the noise stops then its coming from the right and vis versa. as the weight transfers over from wheel to wheel.

Thats just the thing it seems so random at the moment! There is no play in the wheel whatsover, and it doest feedback to the steering wheel...shall have to get it looked at at service time...

another thing to consider is the driveshafts. My old R5 made some funny noises at the front intermittantly when they were shagged.

i think its wheel bearing, change it yourself if you have torque wrench. very easy and lot cheaper!

is it worth getting a haynes manual for stuff like this?

i know there isn't one for the RS range but would a wheel bearing be the same as other models?

Have jacked the car up (again) and spun the wheels. No play in them at all, but the passenger side wheel did seem to spin more freely than the driver side.

I may have been imagining it but am pretty sure. Is this a sympton?!

no, this could be being caused by the brake....you need to spin it very fast to hear a bearing thats just starting to go. it should make a ruff, clicky sound if its gone....if you dont have LSD, jack up 1 side, make sure its sucure, then start engone and put into gear 3, slip clutch and spin wheel until its going v.fast, then take out of gear switch off engine and run to the wheel and listen for your buuuurrrrrrrrrrrrr...

One question - once removed can you tell if its shagged?

yes, turn it in your hands, if it feels worn/ruff, then its shagged as u put it lol

i have to agree with The Fatty, sounds like its a wheel bearing, difficult to test with the car jacked up. you will sometimes hear a rubbing sort of noise when doing that and it can often just be the brake pads rubbing slightly on the discs.

its a common problem with cars of all ages these days but if your not sure get it down the garage for them to take a look at it

sounds like wheel bearings ... if its really bad u should possible feel it through the steering wheel when the burrr noise is goin on....
