182 Coolant change

Hi,
Going to do a coolant change on the clio 182 soon as it is a 04 plate and the colour of the coolant looking not too good.

What coolant does the clio 182 take and how many litres - price too...?

I havent doen this before and read up a bit.
Just to clarify:
-Engine off and cool
-Remove lower radiator connector and let old coolant pour out. Take lid off expansion bottle too.
-Do i have to open the bleed nipple on the thermostat too? If so where is it on pic below? (pic stole from ben_p )
-Put radiator hose back on and close bleed nipple, then refill
-Job done...

Circled is bleed screw.
When refilling fill up till the coolant bottle is full then don't forget to get the engine hot, hold at about 2000rpm for 5-10 mins so the thermostat opens, then you'll have to put in even more coolant.

I used the halfords 5 year coolant in mine. Think it takes 7.1 litres. Probs £20-30 for 5 year stuff, £10-£15 for cheaper.

thanks alot - will this flush the cylinder block as well or do i have to do something else to flush that out?

I'd imagine it would do as there is a hose at the bottom of the engine. Not %100 sure though.

Oh also when filling i think you need the bleed screw undun aswell, untill it starts pooring out.

ye just read the haynes manual

- open cooling system bleed screw
- fill to max mark on expansion bottle
- close bleed screw
-start engine, run at 2500 rpm for 4 mins
-top up level if low
- put cap on expansion bottle
- run engine at 2500 rpm for 10 mins till fan cuts in
- stop engine leave to cool for 30 mins
- recheck level and top up as necessary

does anybody do anything different to this?

How much is the coolant to buy from renault?

The fan on mine has never come on.

Wouln't bother buying from Renault. Probably mega expesnive to.

The proper renault type d stuff is the stuff to go for, isn't that expensive iirc.

always use type D coolant!!! you can get it from GSF or renault premixed in 5L

You could also add some Redline Water Wetter. It increases the coolants ability to conduct the heat.

5.1 liters from memoery it here if you realy want to check.

Renault recomended fluids/amounts/grades to be used.

Is this actually as easy as it seems to do?

And is there just one bleed screw?

I tried to change the coolant on my old VTS and got into a right nightmare. Three bleed screws and no matter how I tried it, I couldn't seem to get the air out and could hear the coolant sloshing around when driving. I even tried the old trick of using a cut off bottle to force the coolant in under more pressure. Caused me all manner of bother before taking it in to a garage like a mug.

It's just today I have booked my car in at Renault on the 4/2/8 for brake fluid change at £29.99 and coolant change at £74.99.

£74.99 seems pretty steep. Brake fluid change on the other hand seems pretty cheap.

Should I just do the coolant myself?

these are the kinda jobs im always thinking about doing on my car, yet i wouldnt fancy doing them myself.

chris after i let citroen do the coolant on my old vts i had simlar problems with the coolant too, in the end took it to a garage to get done, i could hear the coolant when starting the engine!

Coolant At my work is £27.50 for the 5 litres and we charge an hours labour. For a 10 min job.

sorry to waking up the thread. 2 questions:
1. TOTAL GLACELF AUTO SUPRA is a good coolant for clio 172 ?
2. Anybody has pictures what exactly to open to change the coolant beside the bleed screw ?

Had mine done yesterday, drove in warm.
On ramp remove undertray, let cool for a while.
Remove bottom hose, easy with correct tools.
Remove expansion tank lid. Drain.
Remove hose to thermosat & maxogen as in the way of bleed screw.
Hoses back on fill system, remove bleed screw, add more coolant & wait for coolant to change colour & remove air.
Well something along those lines, amongst cup of tea another cup of tea

Doesnt really matter if its warm or not with coolant. But deffo worth doing.

I used Comma Xstream. Which is OAT and very similar to the "ren class D" stuff!

Ideally you could do with it warm as it opens the thermostat and allows more to come out and you know the system is fully drained before you refill.

You also need to make sure the engine comes back up to temp after re filling so it circulates and fills the system properly and allows all air to escape and then allow to cool and check the level is in the middle of the min and max mark and jobs a good one.

i was worried about that too when it was in at the garage last week i got the coolant changed and i asked him about it. he says something about the engine only runs at 86 degrees and needs to be about 92 before the fan will come on

Doing mine as we speak. Need help .... Taken bottom hose of rad, top is off tank and bleed screw is open.
But doesn't look like near 7 liters has come out. Looks more like 5.

By doing the above, is that definitely all of the coolant out?

Or does something else need doing to ensure its all out.


Edit. Looks like 2.5 liters in bucket and maybe a max of a liter spilt on floor.

Yep, need to break the thermostat seal to get the lot out.

Might be a stupid question, but would you recommend changing the thermostat at the same time as the coolant if you need to break the seal?

Another potentially stupid question, can this all be done from above or does the car need to be on axle stands and accessed from below? Thanks!

You can if you want for piece of mind, they only cost about £3 from ECP and its only 3 bolts to take the thermo housing off. You will need to get at the lower rad hose to properly drain the system which is located just up from under the bumper, but I've never been able to get at it from any way except through taking the airbox out and wiggling a set of pliers down from above.
