182 dilemma....



Hi

Looking to buy my first clio and have seen an 04 182 with only 20,000 miles up for sale. Is it worth paying a premium over the many lower milage cars for this? The car is a standard 182 (no signs of any cup packs) This is not a major concern for me but would it harm any resale potential and is it possible to retrospectively fit cup options? Just trying to weigh up all my options.

You can add the anthracite wheels and spoiler/splitter. But there's zero point trying to add the suspension.

I wouldn't pay a mass amount over the top. Has it had its belts done?
 
That all pretty much confirms what i was thinking. No belts done just its 24k service at a main dealer at 19000 miles. Think i will look for a cheaper option with a few more miles with FSH and belts done. Thanks for the info.

Mileage isn't really relevant. I'd rather a 100k car with FSH inc belts etc than a 20,000 mile car thats 7 years old and only had two services with no belts.

i would rather a low mileage car but each to their own, depends how many miles you do and how quick they will rack up. No point buying one on 70k if you do 30k a year.

Think about insisting some money is knocked off the price to make up for the fact the belts are well overdue or that they get them done before you consider buying it

I remember one of the traders on here saying that some of the best RS Clios he sees are the ones doing regular mileage. Sitting in a garage for 7 years isn't any good for them. They want to be used and looked after

When you buy one make sure it has a FSH and the belts are done by Renault or a Renault specialist! This is extreamly important! The cam belts are tricky to fit properly on 182's and there are hundreds of threads about people buying cars with the cam belt replaced then they fail a month or two after ownership due to being fitted incorrectly.. Check the exhaust system too I imagine even the later models will be suffering from rust now.. I prefare to have a lower mileage car but condition is everything! Keep an eye out in the cars for sale section on here some mint ones come up on a daily basis
 
Thanks again for all the information its a great help. There seems to be a big variation in prices with very similar milage and condition cars being advertised for very different prices. Is there a rough figure to be aiming for when looking at a FSH belts done e.t.c sensible milage 182? If anyone knows of a good one going anywhere near Devon preferably in blue let me know!

3K a year wont have done the car any good, especially if the servicing has just been done by mileage (it should be done annually)

I'd go off condition over mileage any day.

True this, on the whole. It is funny when you see a 5-year old car with say, 15,000 miles (like the one I bought!) with FRSH. That actually meant a couple of oil changes and filters in that time(!) so when I got it, everything had to be done (front pads, discs, brake fluid, oil, coolant).
There are obvious advantages to lower mileage though - less pounding along our dreadful roads, may head off squeaks, creaks etc.

Only advantage I can see with having a stupidly low mileage is resale value but then normally you pay a lot more for it in the first place.

My 220k 306 hdi is a good example that mileage means very little. It was in better condition than most 80k ones. The engine had never been apart and it was even on it's original clutch when I sold it earlier this year! It had a very easy life doing 35k on the motorway a year for the first five years.

I'd take that rather than paying out my arse for a car used to nip to to the shops once a week any day. Cars are built for being used.

Engines like to be run. 20000 miles in 7 years is sod all. I make sure mine is take out every week now because clios don't like to sit. I first started having problems with mine once I stopped commuting in it, when it never skipped a beat. I'd go for one with more like 50-60K on it. The premium won't be justified by the mileage for me.
