182 engine in a 172.

I see... As stated its all pretty much the same except for the manifold etc.
 
182 will have a different top oil baffle plate, the 172 has the carbon canister connection here whereas the 182 has it on the back of the inlet manifold.

The 182 baffle plate does not retrofit to the 172.

Yep, but as long as you get the inlet manifold with the new engine it won't be a problem. Mine even came with the longer hose to connect to charcoal can! :D

Would it be possible to drop a 197 engine into a 172 or 182?

dont think it's really worth the work TBH, gearbox wont physically fit. Working on what bits will retro-fit at the moment. finding some things of interest but not much that would be easier or cheaper than just upgrading 172/182 bits to aftermarket for similar cost
