182 engine into a williams....

  '06 Black FF 197
hi there,

I could buy a decent williams with an engine problem, the belt broke and the engine is destroyed...

so I am thinking, for about the same money ( as the wiliiams ) I can buy an engine from the 182, what costs should I be prepared to do the swap,

what other parts need to be changed ?????

the gearbox fits or not?

any advice would be appreceiated....

or would it be just better to repair the engine....??

to be honest, it would be alot better just to replace the head on the williams

im putting a 172 engine into a 1.8 16v at the moment, and the wiring etc is nto a straight swap, an exhaust has to be entirely fabricatred from the manifold back.

are you familiar with the cost of replacing the head and all??? are these parts hard to find? I am from poland, I only see williams' hoods on ebay :)

either that or just rebuild your head?

Cost in england,
£70 for a cambelt kit
£20 for head bolts
£50 for a headgasket set
£3ish pounds each per valve.

so say it bent all 16(possible, depends on how fast the engine was going when it went!) 16x3= £48 for a full set.

total here is:
£188 to have it back running again.

If you cant locate a williams head, a 16v head will fit.

Exhaust valves are more expensive are they not....filled with sodium iirc

I paid a tenner each for exhaust valves when i rebuilt mine

  2005 Nissan Navara
also possible big end bearing damage.

And for the record, williams inlet valves are renault only, and only sold in sets of 4...its £90+vat for a set of 4.

exhausts are about £7+vat each from motor factors.

think Nick @ Hill Power might have already done/tried this about 2 years ago

Yup. I'm pretty sure he was putting a TB'd 172 engine in a Williams 1 when i was there last. Would have loved to hear how it went when it was finished.

As always Nicks one of the first but doesn't feel the need to crow about it ;)

power delivery on the F7R is a lot better and more usable, not only that but they tune up better. Consider that a 172 engine makes around 168bhp stock with wilder cams, where the F7R can make not far off that standard. Add some not even particularly wild cams like RN2002 which would be about an equivalent to the stock F4R ones and the F7R will 90% of the time make much better power through the rev range and more power full stop. Heads are also better to get power out of.

Fair enough. Sounds a bit of an opinion rather than fact though to be honest. And a bit ambiguous to boot.

Don't the F4's ultimately tune better for peak power?

Anyone in the know (engine tuners etc) care to comment?

dont forget when an f4r is in a 172 it has a lot of restrictions like aircon, flyby wire (ph2) exhaust and emmisions and you can pick an f4r up with low miles,a willy lump is probably going to need rebuilding so it evens out price wise,my 172 made 155 atw with breathing mods

  williams and trophy
as jesus says. stick with the f7r.

btw my williams made 149 @ the wheels with just breathing mods....filter/zorst

145@ wheels at a diff rollers.

Just in case you are still considering the 182 conversion we've done it. You'd need to use 172 not a 182 and it'd be much easier if it were an early one without fly by wire (harder to come by). The wiring takes a bit of figuring out as there are so few wiring diagrams out there for the engine. you can use the willaims gearbox and driveshafts but you'll need the 172 O/S engine mount and the williams geabox mount if thats the box your using. The bonnet needs trimming a little on the inside and noones got they're rev counter working to my knowledge. You are best off with a custom exhaust (full 2 1/4 system £350) and you'll need to ditch the power steering. There's plenty more involved but i'm sounding boring now:)
