  clio172
hi wot oil can i put in my 182 cliosport its an o5 plate been told all difrrent grades cheers bolts

5w40 Make sure it's fully synthetic! Try Silkolene pro 5w40 or something similar! Don't go near halfords!

and yet again....5W50 full synth. is the best oil to use ! In clio cup racing we DO NOT use any other type of oil. We get Elf Excellium 5W50 delivered by Renault Sport in Dieppe. And I guess they know where they talk about....All clio's in the cup did NEVER had any engine problems.....

5w50 is for engines running extremely hot on the track (The 50 is the viscosity when warm) so it will stay thicker at the warmer temperatures. 5w40 is better for road/the odd track day!

@stu

well just one question what do you prefer to much or to little lubrication of your bigend bearing and other driving parts???

extremely hot is also not correct. Engine (oil and water) Temp. is the same as my "street" clio, only the time is shorter. race clio's are faster on their working T since they can run "without" traffic.

Also a VERY important issue is to keep the oillevel ALLWAYS maximum, I've seen some Rs s' with engine wearing because of oillevel in the middle of the dipstick !

all the uk cars run elf 5W40!

@fred I did not say 5W40 is bad, but 5W50 is better.....for that little extra cash I would go for 100%....which means also a good lube while hitting the rev. ...

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
Went to halfords to buy some front brake pads for my 182 the other day, unfortunately the manual had been ripped to pieces so had to go to the counter and ask them to look on the computer, he then went to get the pads for me and got them out of the box, asked if they were the right ones....i looked and they were smaller than my old 1.2 clio's pads lol.

I said i thought he had got mixed up and they were for the rear...after 5minutes of trying to tell him they were wrong i gave up and went to my local motor factors, needless to say they got the correct pad first time round.

Moral of the story - Halfords 9 times out of 10 speak s**t!

no i agree, i was just commenting on the fact all uk racers use elf 5W40 (or should do as thats what renault says to use in the book) i know the guys that look after the renaultsport engines for the uk

  "Navy" N17 TWO
Does the spec make a massive difference?

Seen the Millers XFS 5W40 oil is ACEA A3,B3
The ELf Evolution SXR 5W40 is the same spec

@fred......strange matter no offence Fred but I will ask the head engineer of our RenaultSport department (Lucien) today (we have easter trackdays)...

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
Had the 24k service done at Renault main dealer and the receipt says they used "Shell Helix Plus oil 10W/40"?!...

So is this just a typo on their receipt or has the main dealer put the wrong oil in?!....

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
lol, thats common then?...
Sorry, excuse my ignorance, i'm afraid what i know about cars (and my g/f's 182) can be put on the back of a postage stamp, but i'm trying! ;)

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
Probably a stupid question, but.... my g/f had car from new (182 cup 54reg) and has never considered that main dealers etc (always had services at Renault) would but a substandard oil in (ignorance is bliss for both of us!)...

So is it worth changing to 5w40 now that it's been running on 10w40 for the last few years? Would it have done any harm?....

Really, I've always been told it's better to keep the oil level a little low than have too much and risk it blowing out under pressure. 5w50 is probably ok but the book says 5w40? And I think the engine manufacturer should know what oil to use in their engine?

Evans Halshaw Renault Aberdeen put 10w40 in my 172 :(

Would this cause any issues ?

Should i change it asap ?

Or will i get away with it till the next service ?

  RS RIP
Dick you'll be fine with the 10w40...... when you really want you can change at next interval.

I asked the Oilman

I think it was like this; the 5w40 is better when you drive the car a lot on short distances, it gives a better lube on low enginetemps. The 10w40 is better when running long runs with high enginetemps, protecting better ..
