182 Exhaust Manifold

I see from the ads and the write up in Autocar they are making noises about the new exhaust manifold contributing to more power. From what I have read they have changed it from the existing 4:1, to 4:2:1. Many years ago when tuning escort RS2000s and the like was the rage, it was common knowledge that the 4:1 systems produced more peak power, but that the 4:2:1 systems were better in mid range torque. So while a better flowing cat convertor will help the power, I dont see how a change to a 4:2:1 system actually increases power

the shape of exhaust is directly related with inlet-outlet porting, with some mods. of inlet vs outlet and with the use of a higher output flow the torque-powerband will increase. It´s a ´simple´ thermodynamic you can input in a computer and see whats coming out

like you said, old time technology.

Nowadays most exhaust manufactueres can make just the same power as a 4-1 witha long primary 4-2-1. The old addages arent always true, but its more of a base generalisation.

With todays computational design and flow analysis, along with a bette understanding of exhaust theory, helmholtz theory and tuning the exhaust for length @ required rpm operating range, its a tad more complicated than you would originally think.

probably, std complete system is 1086 quid excluding all the gaskets and other junk..just pipes.

can believe it.priced up a standard 172 exhaust centre section up yesterday for a customer and that was £334 on its own.

I vote JAY172 the KING of exterior !! He comes on here and answers nearly everyones questions !! What a bloke !! Wish i had his knowledge !!

If the 182 exhaust manifold was installed in a 172, can be expect the same new torque graph as the 182 (with the increase in power) or are there other modifications that are required (eg. new metallic cat as used in the 182 may be needed to contribute to the flow of gases)?

So:

1. exhaust manifold

2. catalyst

3. mid-pipe (do this really need to be changed?)

4. rear box (what happens if you already have a modified rear box?)

5. ECU

What is etc, etc, etc? What have I missed, Ben?

If your talking about 172>182 mods then there more than that

New shaped cams.

Intake manifold

New injectors

There are better ways to over 182hp than what Renault do but they have a large safty margin whereas modifiers dont needs as big a safty barrier.

I dont think the 182 exhaust (rear section at least) will fit on a 172 becuase of the revised floorplan of the 182. It has no spare wheel, see!!

I was quoted £500 for the centre section by a dealer
