182 Exhaust on a 172 (Ph2)

How difficult is it to have a 182 style exhaust on a 172?

Is it just a case of buying a 182 exhaust andd getting a friendly grease monkey to fit it, or would it have to be a whole cusstom jobbie?

erm very as the manifold is different, cat is different, rear bumper is different and the 172 has a nasty space where the spare wheel goes so a bit more involved !

Hmm, well I already have the different bumper on it I think (it has the 2 semi circle cutouts already). (was like that when I bought it)

I'm planning on fitting a 182 manifold with a KTEC sports CAT anyway, so that takes 3/4 out of the equation surely? :)

Would that make it a whole lot easier?

When it comes down to it, I just much prefer the look of the 182 exhaust/bumper config, so I just want it to look the same, I wouldn't mind at all a performance increase if I had to get a full custom made, as long as it's within legal noise limits and I can pass an MOT, all's good.

ive not done it but surely the sparetyre well would make it hard to do without alot of cutting and welding?

If you fancy welding an entire new boot floor in, yes.

And the 182 mani with ktec sports cat wouldnt fit a 182 exhaust, is modified to fit a 172 job.

Best way would be for you to either get a custom made exhaust (cat back once you've got your ktec mani) with twin tail pipes to fit the bumper but go around the spare wheel well, or just get a normal exhaust and 172 rear bumper.

Guessing your cars had a bump and they've fitted a 182 rear bumper as these are easier to come by on ebay etc.

Having a look around the K-TEC site, I found this: http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=1560 (182 LOOK EXHAUST FOR 172 MODELS).

Which is pretty much what I wanted.

So for about £1200 I can get a 182 manifold, a sports cat and the exhaust look I want (I want to keep the exterior reasonably stock, I only want a 182 exhaust and some new wheels (hate the renault alloys :( love OZ Superturismo GT's (IIRC they came on the first Ph1 172's right? (also love nested brackets))))

I wouldnt spend that on the 182 exhaust manifold and sports cat mate... would just get the cat back exhaust!

Yeah, I could do that, but I wanted to get a sports cat anyway, and I was reading somewhere on here that the 182 manifold is much better anyway, so might as well kill 3 birds with one stone so to speak.

Also if I don't spend the money on my car, I'll only waste it :rasp:

Is it a simple task swapping the 172 mani for a 182 .. or is there some additional work involved .. /sry to derail slightly.

i've written a guide. Pay your £5er and you can see it.

It's a farkin huge manifold which makes it less than simple. You need to remove the subframe to get it in.
Certinally possible. But I wouldn't recommend it to a first time home mechanic

isnt the £1000 odd pound the value difference between your car and a 182?
Try and get a PX deal on a 182??

182 manifolds require quite a lot of labour to fit so don't really seem cost effective IMO unless you are doing it yourself.
Best of luck with your decisions mate.
