182 Exhuast Coupling/Clamp

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
Hi Guys,

Recently been having a bit of grief with my exhaust on my 182 around a clamp which joins the centre pipe to the back box. I think that this has been fitted as the exhaust has been blowing at somepoint. Am i right in thinking when out of the factory the centre pipe/back box is one section?

Heres some pics of the clamp in question, as you can see theres a liquid seeping out of it and onto the floor (quite a sizeable amount for the few minutes the car was running for) i presume this is un burnt petrol?

Ive also recorded a vid trying to capture the rattling sound that is being made although unfortunately my phone hasn't done a very good job at capturing the sound so will try to make another vid again tomorrow.

That clamp is cr@p, doesn't even look like these any sealant around the join. Get something like this:

and a liberal application of firegum around the join

Something like that easy enough to change over with the car on axle stands on the drive? now you mention it the guy who repositioned the joint didnt apply any firegum type sealent

Should all be one piece mate. The liquid is water, is normal for there to be a bit in the system after the cat.

Next question before i go upto CES, when applying the exhaust sealent paste do i need to just apply a little around the joint or is it best to use plenty of the stuff and wipe the excess off once the clamps fitted and tightened?

Best to apply plenty of the stuff on the inner surface of the clamp. Then once the clamp has tightened, wipe off the excess. Then go for a gentle drive to heat up the exhaust gradually to set the firegum. The firegum will expand and set with the heat to seal any gaps in the clamp.
