182 Horrible Noises....

Fitted a decat to my 182 last night due to my cat breaking up. Ended up taking it for a rather spirited hour-long drive with everything getting very hot. Noticed alternator light flashed a few times at the redline - has happened before so was not worried.

All of a sudden the car started to make this horrible loud grinding / rubber / slightly metallic sound. Almost sounded like something like a rubber belt was breaking apart in the gearbox / engine area. Very similar to a flat tyre sound. Instantly pulled over and noticed that the noise stopped whilst out of gear and not moving. The noise only happens when moving in gear. Accompanied by a burning oil/rubber smell under the bonnet.

After cooling down the noise seems to be gone for the moment but I am left with a really loud whine now in all gears - depressing the clutch and the noise goes away.

Really confused about what this could be. Has anyone had anything like this before? Thanks

Update: So I went for a short drive and I think the gearbox or slave cylinder / release bearing has blown up. Something went pop, lots of metallic rattling and pissing oil everywhere out near the bell housing. It certainly isn't engine oil and has a strange smell. Is gearbox oil clear?

Box oil stinks.

Get under and see where it’s coming from and post a pic.

My diff s**t the bed last year and punched a hole near the crown wheel.

I lost a bearing on one of the shafts and that punched a hole in the box that I thought was the diff exploding.

It whined like mad for about a mile then went pop. Very terminal.

Tried looking underneath and from the top but I can’t see anything without lifting it. The oil is all over the bottom of the gearbox.

Clutch pedal still feels firm so can’t see it being hydraulic fluid and it smells so bad…

Is the diff separate or inside the gearbox?

Anyone know what gearbox mine would be, and any good sources of rerurbed units?

If it was just a leak I’d say a seal but coupled with the noises you’re hearing it could potentially be the shaft.

The diff is inside the gearbox and the unit for a 182 is JC5-089, there’s a few on ebay.

182 uses a JC5-130 gearbox as standard but I’m aware of an exchange unit - JC5S89 - which was available from Renault. Is this what you’re referring to?

The 172 used JC5-129 or JC5-089, which had a speedo drive. The “JC5S89” could be a service part - a remanufactured JC5-130 - or a related JC5 variant that’s compatible but not necessarily standard for the 182.

Thanks for the replies. It's never a good day when this stuff happens! The clutch was only replaced around 1500-2000 miles ago. The clutch still feels OK and does drive, very badly up until I parked it up. I was thinking either the clutch has broken up or one of the drive shaft seals has failed? I could hear this rubber kind of sound when it first went.

I have some decisions to make. Originally I bought the car as a bit of fun but I have become so attached to it and enjoy driving it so much. Wondering if now would be a good time to take the whole lot out and go to town.

Mine is a cup so presume the gearbox is the same as a regular 182? Not sure if I should source a refurbed / second hand unit or see if mine is rebuildable?

How easy is the gearbox to take out - it comes out through the wheel arch after dropping the subframe doesn't it?

Anything is rebuildable pretty much, you’ve just got to have the resources available to do that kind of work. Jc5 130 was fitted in all 182’s as well.
