182 lost drive

  clio182, defender
Got a 04 plate clio 182 67000 miles. It's lost all drive. Can select gears but dosnt move. Also speedo dosnt rise. Any ideas what it could be? Was pulling out of junction and just went. Cheers jeremy

diff, driveshaft-cv joint, gearbox, something causing the clutch to remain disengaged.

You don't get any noises, grinding of metal...

Could be the circlip come off on the NS of diff. Whip the inner cv boot off and should be clear. Was a common fault on MK1 valvers. Circlip is a few quid from Renault.
speddor used to rise to indicate this, but as 182 speedo is driven by ecu/abs sensors this wont happen on later 172s and 182s.

Just because the diff is a bolt in doesn't mean the heads haven't snapped off. Also, as above by @loggyboy the speedo wouldn't rise on a 182 due to the speedo being driven by ABS signal.

You need to check all CV joints, inner and outer. This means remove them from the hubs. If they're all good, drop the gearbox oil, look for metal in this, then remove the shafts all together and inspect both the diff and the splines on the sunwheel as these can taper off.

If the above is all good and no problems are found then the box has to come out and be opened up for inspection.
